| Show THE FORCE BILL Letters From Cleveland and Tliurman On It Governor Campbells Position COLUMBUS Ohio Aug 2A meeting under the auspices of the Thurman club t protest against the passing of ftfefed eral election bill was held at the east front of the capitol this evening About fifteen hundred were I scnt 1 was expected that Judge Tfiurrnari would preside and make a brief speech but when the committee t escort him arrived ho presented them with a let ter to be read which contained his regrets and tho informatipn that sickness alone prevented him from fulfilling his promise He wrote a brief denunciatory of the I bill and its provisions and expressed the i opinion that the measure would not pass I the Senate A letter of regret was read from ex President Cleveland in which he expressed I a desire to be enrolled among those who I protest against the passage of the bill and I expressing wish thatth a thafodications were not so numerous that cn jax of congress ¬ ional recklessness had C1ax reached in which the protests of the people have jittle weight Senator Elect Brice sent a letter saying the proposed law was repugnant to Democratic nubile Dem-ocratic ideas and full of danger to the re publc Several speeches were made against the bill Governor Campbell was not reached in the list of speakers until a late Lour and did not talk at length and he devoted his time t an explanation of the provisions of the bill and the probable result its enforcement Regarding the recent publication that he would employ the state militia in opposition to tho enforcement of the bill in his state he said the whole statement was a falsehood Resolutions of protest were presented by Allen W Thurman andadopted The reso lutions were in sympathy with the general tenor of the addresses |
