| Show A Talk with Edward Hanlon OJIAHA Aug 2Special telegram to I THE HEKALD Edward Hanlon of Toronto To-ronto and John Teemer of Pittsburg the two oarsmen arrived in the city last evening even-ing to arrange for an exhibition race at Lake Manawa near Council Bluffs Iowa Hanlon being asked about his proposed I match with Gaudaur said There is i nothing certain about it just at present The papers say that he has accepted my challenge to row any good water in the country coun-try but tho fact is that ho has done nothing of tho kind or rather he has accepted it conditionally I want the water to be mutually agreed upon and the referee can say whether or not it Is in proper condition for racing at the hour for I the race Gaudaur will not agree to that He wants to be the judge as to the condition condi-tion of the water and then when it is time for the race if he does not happen to feel like going into it he can say that the water is not fit and refuse to race I dont propose pro-pose t train my heart out for eight or ten weeks for a race and then not have it como off You must not think that I am afraid to7row Gaudaur on smooth water as I sm ready to row him on any water that the refereewill say is fit to row on but I do insist that the referee shall be the judge of it just the same as the baseball I base-ball umpire and not the captains are tho judges of the playing weather |
