| Show I UTAH SCHOOL FINANCES I A recent census bulletin makes an exhibit I ex-hibit ot the school finances of this territory for the year ISM The showing is creditable credit-able as compared with many of the states notwithstanding tho fact that Utah has no school lands or other fund from which to draw support for the cause of education Every dollar for school houses and expenses ex-penses must come from taxation The bulletin bul-letin makes the following showing for last year Pupils enrolled 36372 teachers wages and miscellaneous 245001 per capita of pupils enrolled 674 total school expenditures 394077 per capita of pupils enrolled SIOS5 per capita of population 190 But while the exhbit for the territory is highly creditable we fear so much cannot be said for some of the counties la the matter of school buildings if we take out three or four counties too others would nol make a very good showmz Of the fJ43 932 invested in school buildings and property prop-erty Salt Lake has 31Gr 35 or more than Wi i per cent of the total and of the total expenditures J3JJ077 Salt Lake is credited credit-ed with 140481 or over 37 per cent Weber has 170397 in school buildings and other property Utah 81215C Cache M3 531 Summit 35249 and no other county reaches 30000 Utah leads Weber in the matter of school expenditures tho total of tue former being SiS33 to 34044 of tho latter Summit with 27371 leads Cache which expended 526615 It Is thought that the territory will make a much batter exhibit in school matters for 1591 > than for ISO This will certainly bo the calC with Salt Lake county |
