| Show The Speakrrship Contest Gets Lively WASHINGTON Dec IThe spaakership I contest Is increasing In liveliness and interest In-terest each day and this morning there was a fair accession made to the list of members town All five candidates ox pressed themselves as hopeful and reported re-ported matters as progressing satisfactorily satisfactor-ily from their point of view General Cotchlnga of Mississippi one of Crisps chief lieutenants claims that his candidate has captured then entire Democratic delegation dele-gation fromNew Jersey Crisps friends also said they had an assurance of four votes from New England I Mill it sangulnethe forces are working favorably to his interests and expresses himself as entirely confident of the result The mills men are endeavoring to make New England a unit and they say they expect ex-pect all the votes from that section except two This claim however is not conceded by tho other candidates nor is Crisps claim to Now Jersey conceded McMillin said today that he saw no reason rea-son to change his opinion that the fight will be a long one in which case his strength would increase and that he felt matters were going along satisfactorily Springer was also in a cheerful mood and said he was more than holding his own as respects the first votes and had today made material progress in providing for the event of a break among the other candidates I can-didates a great many Representatives haying I hay-ing given him assurances that he would get their votes whenever they changed The arrival of Judge Holman of Indiana and the announcement of his position on the speakership question is awaited with some interest Friends of Mills express more confidence than those of any one else of securing his support At Hatches headquarters head-quarters It was said that things are quiet Candidates for minor offices are beginning begin-ning an active campaign Marsh of Pennsylvania Penn-sylvania has practically withdrawn from tile contest for clerk of the House and Pennsylvania IB advocating the claims of Kerr while Indiana is urging selection se-lection for postmaster Another exCon gressman McClammy of North Carolina has become a candidate James R Fisher assistant postmaster and chairman of the Nirginia Democratic state central committee commit-tee is i regarded with favor by many members mem-bers for this position Practically there Is no change in the contest con-test today A list of members in the city showed 120 A number of these have not committed themselves yet Springer places the number of unknowns at 100 The Crisp and Mills following both worked actively today and expressed themselves as encouraged McMllhn Springer and Hatch said their advices were all favorable favor-able Springer secured some additional adherents in the arrival of State Treasurer Wilson and party of Illinois and Congressman Congress-man Bryan of Nebraska While the chances of election are decidedly de-cidedly in favor of Mr Mills of Texas yet 1 the Democratic majority in the house of representatives is so large that comblna tiomi may arise to defeat him Among the I other prominent candidates in the contest are Messrs Crisp and Springer whose pictures and brief biographies we give I herewith c7 CONGRESSMAN CrflSP Though heis not advanced in years the I coming will be his fifth term in Concrcsa Ho was born in Sheffield England early in I 1843 of American parents The sameyear he was brought to Georgia where he was educated Ho fought in the Confederate I I army with the rank of lieutenant was taken prisoner and incarcerated In Fort Delaware After his release in 1865 he read law In Schloy county Ga where at Eilaville he oponed an office for practice Subsequently be served In u 1 local court as solicitorgeneral and In June 1877 was appointed jude of the supreme court of the Southwestern Judicial circuit He was elected to that office the next year and again In 1SSO In 1SS2 he resigned in ordor to become be-come a candidate for Congress of which he is a leading member I 5s 1 Y srmINoEn Ho was born in Indiana in 1636 When two years old he was taken to Illinois by his parents In ISIS he was graduated at the India a State University MrSprlnger has been on the roll of attorneys since 1S59 His public life began in 1862 when he was secretary of the state constitutional convention con-vention of Illinois In 1871 and 1S73 ho was n member of the Illinois legislature He has been a congressman since his election to the Fortyfourth Congress and few men are equally well acquainted with public business Mr Springer is the husband of a lady of remarkable literary ability who is one of the leaders of society in Washington |
