Show High Flying Darts Tackle Ben Lomond HJy DAVE WIGHAM KAYSV1LLE It's usually usual-ly about this time of the year that folks start taking notice of the basketball tcim at Davis High. Things are different this ear. Already the Darts have caught their attention. MIKE GARDNER has his Darts flying high through the preseason slate and talk is the Davis five are ready to make a challenge for the region crown. First up in that quest for the title is a confrontation this Friday Fri-day with Ben Lomond on the Scots' home floor. "IT'S ALWAYS tough to beat (hem up at their place." noted Coach Gardner. "They always seem to come up with a different twist defensively when they face us. And we know they'll do something special against Taylor," he added. Mike went on to talk about the early success of his team. "When you stop and look at it we have several losses. One to Clearfield in the closing moments, mo-ments, and a couple to View-mont: View-mont: all good clubs. Then consider we've knocked off clubs like Woods Cross, w ho is a fine team. Yes. we have played play-ed well." IN TALKING about the Scots, the likeable Davis coach was concerned about their height. "They have a Salisbury kid back from a year ago and then a Smith kid that played a lot. Both are around 6'4" and will give us problems inside." Each year the Scots have employed a special defense against the Darts and the Davis coaches are expecting the same this year. "We know they'll box and chase Taylor." Taylor of course is the great junior guard for Davis who is averaging right around 18 points per outing for the Darts. Brian is the man they look to in tight situations and he usually responds well. AT 6'3" Brian causes problems prob-lems for smaller guards who try to take him man for man but his main asset, besides his shooting, is his great passing ability. The Darts are far from a one man show though. Lance Hill and Lynn Lloyd are a couple of seniors who are playing great ball right now. Both are great hustlers and dedicated to any sport they participate in. Lance battles with the tall timber tim-ber under the boards while Lynn uses his speed on the guardline. BIG MAN for the Darts is 6'6" David Bock who could be the key to this battle. "We need David in the middle for rebounding as welt as scoring. Without him we have almost no height at all. He does get into foul trouble a little but he's working hard and is improving," impro-ving," noted his coach. Brad Caldwell is the other starter for Davis and he too works hard at both ends of the floor. Although small for a forward for-ward he has the bulk to battle inside with anyone; an aggressive aggres-sive ball player who gives 100 percent. THE BENCH strength is solid with guys like Brent Hatch, who can play either guard or forward, Mike McGill and Chris Cottrell ready to come in and contribute. Davis is playing well as a team right now. They are well disciplined and know what they have to do to win games. Davis has enjoyed success early ear-ly this year and it should continue con-tinue on into league play. |
