Show Davis School Board Looks At Mountain Letters By ROSELYN KIRK FARM1NGTON - Requests for the construction of additional addi-tional block letters on the hillside hill-side in South Davis County could cause problems for the Davis County School board, members said. But the board will wait to take action on the matter. JOEL Briscoe, a Davis County High School student appeared before the board to question whether something else besides concrete couldn't be planned should Woods Cross High School decide to use money collected for a block letter. Mr. Briscoe said with the rapid population growth rate in the county that if each school is to receive equal treatment in being allowed to place a letter in the hill that the hillside could be inundated with block letters. SHERYL Allen, school board member said, "I don't think a letter on the mountain is necessary for schopl spirit. We may have a flood of letters on our hands if we don't consider con-sider our policy carefully." According to Mr. Briscoe other alternatives are possible. possi-ble. He suggested planting on . the hillside in the form of a letter or the placement of a letter near the school grounds. ASSISTANT Supt. Gayle Stevenson said that although Woods Cross High School had raised $900 for a school symbol that many options are available availa-ble as to how that money would be spent. Morris Hansen, school board member, suggested sug-gested that a good spot behind the bleachers was available where an electric symbol would be effective. According to board member Theo Italasano, all three sites selected by the school for the possible placement of the letter let-ter are private hillside sites. She said the U.S. Forest Service Ser-vice had agreed to send an architect to talk to students about other plans for symbols besides that of a block letter on the hill. . MRS. Italasano said by the time the money was raised the school would have considered more advantageous ways of displaying their symbol. This feeling was echoed by Mr. Stevenson. Although Mrs. Allen and. Mr. Hansen said there may be more problems if the board waits until the money is raised for the Woods Cross project, ihe board decided to bide their time for the present. |
