Show J?. Ccilsp For Davis?: Scsds Lfco An Idea ! By DAVE WIGHAM With all the top talent in the high schools in the area, Davis County is only missing one thing. A JUNIOR college. Just think of the possible teams that this junior college could have. Even if the recruiting was limited to Davis County they would field a highly competitive squad in any sport. THE UNIVERSITY of Utah and Weber State indicate that there isn't enough population to warrant a junior college. That is fine but why don't these two schools recruit the local athletes then. Only one or two get offers from the big schools. The others are told by them to go to a junior college for a couple of years and then they'll see what happens from there. SO OUR LOCAL athletes get to go to such booming places as Ephraim, St. George or Price. All to play junior - college athletics. Nothing against these places or their programs, they : give the locals a chance to play, but it would still be ; better if they had a place at home to play. WITH THE population growing in the area the way it Is there is still plenty of people to go to the other schools and still have enough to require a junior college. Very few junior colleges offer a full ride to athletes, t they all get partial. This means the kids or parents end ' up paying for some of the schooling. If there was a junior - college around they could stay at home and receive the . scholarship for books and tuition and everyone would be, happy. EACH YEAR the local athletes go off to play for :.- schools like Snow, Dixie, Ricks and others. Davis, Lay-. Lay-. ton, Bountiful, Viewmont and Clearfield send countless numbers of athletes from various sports to these insti-' insti-' " tutions. Why not have them all stay here in the county? ' THERE HAVE been rumors about such a college for years, but nothing concrete has been done. Maybe with the cost of a college education going up every year someone will suggest the junior college route in Davis County. |
