Show UlIlluP Sccli By DAVE WIGHAM After their first three games of the season it looked like Viewmont was ready to step back into the spotlight of prep football, but inconsis-tancy inconsis-tancy has stopped the Vikes cold on many occasions. THEIR first game of the season was against East. Although the score was only 7-0 favor of the Vikes, the game really wasn't that close. Next the Vikes traveled to Skyline, currently undefeated and ranked number one in the state, and it took a last minute touchdown to defeat the Vikes. At this point it looked as if the Vikes were ready to make their move in Region 2. The " following week the Vikes went out to Keams. This game turned out to be a sign of things to come as mental mistakes cost the Vikes the ballgame. NO EXCUSES are offered by either the coaches or this reporter, but consider these facts: The Vikes have lost quite a few players to injuries including some key people. Each week it seems like the Vikes need someone new to run the ball. They have been hit hard by injuries in the backfield. Maybe the Vikes are a home team ball club. Did you realize that Viewmont is 1-0 at home? Unfortunately, they are 0-4 on the road. Some might say that it doesn't make any difference in football where the game is played, but if none of yours players have had any experience in varsity football, it would help to have the majority of fans from yuur school. The field probably doesn't matter that much, but the amount of support certainly cer-tainly does. LAST WEEK the Vikes had just about everything working against them. First they had to travel, again, up to Layton. Second it happened to be the Lancers Homecoming which adds to their getting up for a game. And third the Lancers had been upset the week before by Ogden and decided to take it out on the Vikes. Add these three facts up, plus the fact that the Vikes didn't play well at all, and the result was inevitable. AGAIN IT was the Vikes offense that sputtered, lately nothing seems to be working offensively for the Vikings. With the offense unable to move the ball the defense is called on more than their share of the time. The defense has performed admirably for the Vikes but because of the amount of time they have to play they get tired and thats usually when the damage is done. At the first of the game the Vike defense stops their opponents but after playing the entire game they get tired and sloppy. AGAINST Layton it was more of the same, as the game wore on the Vikes wore down. Lancer running back Curtis Page scored three touchdowns and split end Pete Dennis scored the other. The Vikes made a change at quarterback last week to see if it would perk up the offense, of-fense, it did a little. If it would perk up the offense, it did a little. If this change can generate the offense and give the defense a rest the Vikes could still get back into the Region race, dw |
