Show He-Classified Teams Doing Well In State Football By DAVE W1GHAM For years some followers of high school football have bea, saying things like any 4 A school could play in the 3A state tournament and win. After all the smaller schools fftt supposed to lose to the bigger boys. A YEAR AGO the names of the 3A tournament were lie likes of Davis, Judge, Ben Lomond and Logan. Well i aJy the latter one still remains, k fhe other three semifinalists are Bountiful, West and 1 Highland- All three of these schools were in the 4A ranks ! J; of this time last year. In fact the Bountiful and West j dubs were playing each other in the state 4A tournament- THIS YEAR doesn't mean that simply because these oee clubs went from the 4A ranks to the 3A ranks they : ae enjoying instant success. The West and Bountiful cubs were always involved in the state tournament while I intlHA ranks in football. Highland simply has an out-i out-i jading club this season, one that very well could be in ' j 4A tournament had they stayed in their previous ' ' region. ' : The high school classification has nothing to do with '! ahletics at all. A school can't apply for another clas- 5: station simply because they don't win any events in iter current classification. They are classified only by the number of students enrolled in the school. Thinking behind that is the more you have to choose from the better off your team should be. FANS IN this area can be proud of the accomplishments accomplish-ments of the clubs they have been watching. Region Five 6 malting believers out of everyone since three of the (our clubs left in the 3A championships are from the tegue. And as one paper noted on Saturday, if Woods Crass were in the tournament all four would probably be tram the league. Then too, remember that the Layton club is still alive V' and playing the best ball of the year in the 4A ranks. I SIMPLY GOING from 4A to 3A doesn't make a club an I instant success. The three clubs in the 3A semis would more than likely be there in 4A also. |
