Show Libraries Inadequate It is unfortunate that the Layton-Davis County Library issue has turned into a censorship cen-sorship controversy when the real problem is that Davis County libraries are, and have long been, inadequate for our communities. WHEN I was a teenager, I thought that a community the size of Bountiful could not expect much in library services ser-vices and so, with many of my peers, I went to the Salt Lake libraries for debate and research projects, a practice still common with high school students today. However, when I married and lived in several places outside of Utah for a few years, I noticed that Davis County's libraries did not compare favorably with libraries in any size community. com-munity. When we returned to Bountiful Boun-tiful to live, I began investigating inves-tigating library standards and discovered excellent libraries elsewhere in Utah, but that ours was severely lacking both quantitatively and qualitatively in nearly every category. I talked to teachers in Davis County who said that they could not assign outside book reports because the kids grew frustrated doing do-ing research in the Davis County libraries, and, after investigating the libraries themselves, the teachers found this frustration valid. I TALKED to several librarians in the state who agreed that our libraries were poor and, to quote one librarian in particular, "Davis libraries are a joke at our state libiary meetings." I asked them how we could make them better and heard over and over that the only way our system could be improved im-proved would be to get rid of Jeanne Layton as head librarian.
