TRAVEL EUROPE i i ' I Three Bountiful students j attending Brigham Young i University have recently re-l re-l turned from a six-week tour ! to six Eastern European na-! na-! tions as members of the in-! in-! ternationally-known BYU i American Folk Dancers. ! DAVID DUGGAR, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Dug's Dug-'s gar, and Lisa Kartchner, ' daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray W. Kartchner, and Lorraine Austin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Austin, are back at i BYU after a series of perfor-' perfor-' mances overseas. : David is a 1972 graduate of i-' 6 Bountiful High School. He , ; 5 later served an LDS mission 3 in Bristol, England. He is a i senior student at BYU, I majoring in English. . LISA," A 1976' graduate of k Bountiful High School, was a member of the Bountiful High drill team, honor society, and " was a Sterling Scholar in :. English. She is a home f - economics major at BYU in F 1 .. nonors program. Lisa Kartchner, Dave Duggar and Lorraine Austin, 1 to r, recently returned from extensive travel in Europe with Young Ambassadors from BYU. All three are Bountiful residents. Lorraine is a cheerl ader, gymnast, and is active in drama. She is a humanities major at BYU. THE AMERICAN Folk Dancers presented 22 scheduled performances in Romania, Bulgaria, the Soviet Union, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary, winning the coveted gold medal as the best folk dance team at the International Folk Dance and Youth Festival on the Black Sea in Bulgaria. They also performed several impromptu shows and taped two 90-minute television specials in Romania and the Soviet Union for an estimated audience of 170 million viewers. ,.."' THEY RECEIVED standing stand-ing ovations and enthusiastic responses throughout the six socialist countries. All members of the group expressed surprise at the overwhelming reactions and friendliness of the audience. The 30-member dance troupe performed a variety of American dances including exhibition square dances, polkas, the Virginia Reel, the Charleston, tap dances, Jazz and swing dances, and the Carolina and Kentucky Clogs. THE GROUP was directed by Mary Bee Jensen of BYU's College of Physical Education, Educa-tion, who is also the U.S. delegate to the International Confederation of Folklore Festivals and who is also considered to be one of the world's foremost specialists in folk dances. She organized the BYU Folk Dancers in 1956. This year's tour was the 15th consecutive year that BYU's Folk Dancers have toured Europe. Although they : have performed in socialist countries in previous years, this was the first time the group had toured exclusively in Eastern Europe. The group has won many gold medals and other first-place awards at national and international dance festivals. |
