There is a yowl of excitement and then they're off. Like a well-oiled machine every paw is synchronized as the sled streaks across the snow as fast as a speeding snowmobile. The annual Kanganark Mushers dog sled races are back and if you have never seen a dog team in action, now is your chance. The races will be held at Wasatch Mountain State Park Saturday and Sunday. Spectators are urged to attend at no charge. Saturday's heats will begin at 10 a.m. with the three-dog teams running a 3.5-mile course. The three-dog teams will be followed by the six- and then the eight-dog teams, running 6.5 and 8 miles respectively. On Sunday at 10 a.m. the starting order will be reversed with the eight-dog harnesses getting first shot at the course. Mushers will compete from all over the Intermountain West for a purse of $2,500. Don Rosebrock, president of the Kanganark Mushers, said this weekend's races will be the only ones of their kind in Utah this year. He added the competitors would appreciate it if spectators do not bring their own dogs to the event. |
