Three pounds of cocaine, with a street value estimated at more than $250,000, was seized by task force agents "working on a tip following an extensive investigation." Lane C. Stromberg, 35, of 1487 S. 1250 W., Syracuse, has been booked into Davis County Jail on' $250,0OO'bail," according to Layton Police Chief Doyle Talbot, who is currently head of the Davis Metro Narcotics Force. He, said the suspect has been booked on charges of possession of cocaine and marijuana with intent to distribute; one count of unlawful sexual intercourse; and two counts of failure to affix a drug stamp to the drugs. Chief Talbot noted that the arrest was made with a search warrant after Syracuse police obtained sufficient information about the possession pos-session of drugs. The raid was made by the narcotics squad assisted by Clearfield and Layton police officers. He said investigation into the case is continuing. con-tinuing. "We were surprised to find the amount of cocaine that we did," said Chief Talbot. "It must be one of the largest, if not the largest single narcotics raid ever in Davis County." The raid, incidentally, fell on the heels of a report to the Davis County Council of Governments Govern-ments that "drug-fighting funds for use by the narcotics task force are drying up." Chief Talbot told the city mayors that "the drug problems still exist in the county, but that funds to investigate drug-related problems have been drying up during the past two years to a point of forcing cutbacks or changes in its " ' (task' force) operations." He said the task force in 1987 investigated 425 cases which resulted in 208 drug charges being filed against 140 persons. Three undercover under-cover agents comprise the task force which is currently based in Layton. Last year, the task force was under the direction of Chief Daren Green with headquarters in Clearfield. Chief Talbot told the COG delegates that "the drug problem in Davis County isn't going away; in fact some new drugs, like crack, are on the scene with some of the older drugs like LSD." He emphasized that drug investigations in Davis County were equally distributed last year with 40 in Bountiful, 39 in Layton, and 38 in Clearfield. Other cities had fewer numbers, he noted. |
