Show NEW KING PROCLAIMED I ON ALEXANDER'S DEATH BELGRADE, Servia, June 11. A military revolution broke out here last night. T,he troops, who revolted under the leadership of MaJ. Anglkovlcs, surrounded sur-rounded the palace, assassinated King1 Alexander, Queen Draga, the hitter's sister, the Queen's brother, Nikodem; Premier Markovitch, Ministers Petrovitch JA Tudorovlcs. Gen. Pavlovltch, the former Minister of War, and some of the members of the royal guard. Prince Karageorgevltch was proclaimed King. A new Government was formed and the following proclamation was Issued: . . "To the Servian People: Last night the King and Queen were shot. In thla - grave and fateful movement friends of the fatherland have, combined to form - a new' Government. While the Government makes this announcement to the people it is convinced that the Servian people will gather around it and lend - It their aid to maintain order and security throughout the land. The Government Govern-ment hereby makes known that from today the Constitution of April 6, 1901, comes in force. A meeting -the National Representatives, dissolved by the proclamation of March 24th,. is summoned to meet at Belgrade, June 15th. "JOVAN AVAKUMOVICS. Premier. , . "L. Minister of Finance. "LJUBIMOMIR SCHIOKOVECS. Minister of Justice." j .PEOPLE APPROVE ACTION OF REVOLUTION'. , The streets were thronged with people, whose actions seem, to approve the coup d'etat. M. Protlcs, the new Minister of the Interior, was loudly cheered, as he drove to the ministry. M. Avakumovics, the new Premier, belongs to the Independent Liberty party. The people received the news of the assassinations, which were perpetrated between 10:30 last night and 2 o'clock this morning, quietly. The bodies of the King .and Queen remain in the palace. Aa the morning advanced the excitement in the streets grew steadily. In' spite of the pouring rains thousands of people gathered in the vicinity of the palace. Everywhere troops of all arms were posted and field guns were placed In position to quickly deal with any opposition to the newly formed Government's Govern-ment's will. The soldiers discarded their cockades bearing the late King Alexander's Alex-ander's cipher and substituted for it flowers, green twigs and leaves. Bands of young men paraded the streets, waving flags' and shouting "Long lige Kara Keorgrevl ten." Flags are flying from nearly every house in Belgrade and there is absolutely no dieplay whatever of crepe or other signs of mourning. The royal standard has been lowered from over the palace. Reports from places outside Belgrade Indicate that the country aceepts the disappearance of the Obrenovitch dynasty without regret. 1 . -ALEXANDER BECAME KING WHEN 13 YEARS OLD Milan I., father of the assassinated King, was born at Jassey, August 10, 1854. He was a grand-nephew of Mllos Abrenovitch, and was adopted as his heir by his second cousin, Michael IIL, Prince of Servia. When Michael was murdered, in. 1868, Prince Milan was at school in Paris, but he at once returned to Servia, and in 1872 at Belgrade was crowned as Prince Milan IV. In 1876 he declared war against Turkey, and was ' defeated, but joined Russia In the war of 1877 and obtained Independence for Servia. Ser-via. He was crowned King in 1876, but was not recognised by the powers as such until' 1882. He married Natalie, a Russian lady, but obtained an illegal divorce di-vorce from her in 1888, the quarrel leading lead-ing to his abdication In 1889 in favor of his son Alexander. Later he was reconciled to Natalie and returned to reside in Belgrade, but Alexander Al-exander retained the throne. At the time Alexander took the throne he was 13 years of age. The four years of his regency were much disturbed by the continual quarrels of the ex-King and his consort, who asserted her right to reside permanently In Servia, where she was very popular with all classes. Finally both she and her husband agreed to leave the country. Alexander arrested the -three regents on the night of April 13, 1893. while they were at dinner, and stationed his troops In all Government offices. The following morning he issued a proclamation pro-clamation dissolving the National Assembly As-sembly and announcing his intention to save the nation from disaster. His coup was suyessful, and thus encouraged on May 21. 1894. he abolished the constitution consti-tution adopted five years before and re-stored re-stored the constltuUon of 1869. |
