Show ONLY ONE ISKILLED Explosion of Giant Powder Pow-der Entombs Five Men in Mine. LEADVILLE, June 11. Two hundred hun-dred and fifty pounds of giant powder exploded at the shaft-house of the Fortune For-tune mine yesterday, destroying the shaft-house and machinery. Five men were entombed In the mine until 5 o'clock, when all .were rescued except the superintendent, Patrick Barker, Bark-er, who was found dead in the bottom of the shaft with his head cut off. The explosion was caused by a fire, which Ignited the powder, and the explosion ex-plosion completely wrecked the surface buildings.' Supt. John D. Murphy of the Resurrection Resur-rection mine, adjoining, at once organized organ-ized a rescue force and started down the Sedalla shaft, as the workings of this property connect with those of the Fortune. For-tune. The pumps of the Sedalla were started and by 6 o'clock an entrance was effected into the mine and the miners brought to the surface uninjured. Supt. Barker had climbed up the Fortune For-tune shaft some distance after the accident ac-cident occurred, and was probably struck by falling timber. His head was torn from his body. |
