Show PHS: Girls' track team strong PAROWAN - Whether or not the Parowan girls track team can match its sterling performance of last year-second in the state to North Summit--remains to be seen. But individual Ram gals will almost certainly be seen among the very top girls come time for the state meet in May. PHS coach Donna Owens is optimistic, but still has some concerns with this year's squad. "If we can get the girls out and working, we should do quite well," she said. "But we're having problems getting girls to fill some events, especially the longer distances." Angie Bentley, a state qualifyer as a junior last year, should give her team good experience in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. But, Owens points out,' Parowan has a lot to look forward to as well. "Some of our fastest girls are just freshmen. Cindy White, Debbie Allen and Denelle Robinson should all be strong in the shorter distances." The event to especially watch will be the 400 meter run, where Misti Bentley will be attempting at-tempting to better her state record, set last year as a sophomore. She should be a cinch to better 1:00; her state record time last year was 1:01. Tawna Heap is also expected to do well in the 400. In the 800, Barbara Davenport may also contend for the upper echelons at state. She finished third in the region last ,year, before fading at the state meet. In the field events, Parowan should also do well. Christie Austin, who placed at region last year, will be back to throw the discus. Misti Bentley is expected ex-pected to challenge for a second state title in the shot put. "Misti placed third in the region last year," said Owens, "and it was the first time she'd even thrown a shot put. With practice, she should be much better in that event." Julie Wright, Lori Robinson and Jaylee Turner will all try the long jump, a new event for each of them. Freshman Wright will also head up Parowan's high jumpers. Both relay teams, the 400 and mile, are ex pected to be strong. |
