Show ..flron. County Spring Sports. 1981 CHS: Baseballers fr 111 .TfA SM-'!-t4 1 r.u c afc&i-J i Neil Bladen Kyle Kingsford Gary Alger and Carter, Coach Jenson indicated that as many as 13 other Cedar High players are capable of pitching either in relief or as starters if necessary. Kevin Garrett, a regular first baseman, is capable of back-up pitching as is Shane . Baggs, a center fielder; Bruce Amador, an outfielder; Richard Miller, backup second baseman; Danny Harris, outfielder; and K.C. Jones, who, according to Jenson, can play any position on the field, and play it well. Pitching should only get better for CHS in the future. Along with the juniors Amador, Miller, and Harris, there are sophomores Jones and Robert Nakken. Looking good for the Redmen are also freshmen Robert Pearson, Roger Hulet and Brett Stapley. "The biggest thing going for us this year is experience," stated Jenson. "We have eight returning letermen, plus a lot of kids who didn't letter but who saw action last year." Coach Jenson said that the team has faced no major drawbacks thusfar. But he did indicate in-dicate that it is a competitive com-petitive region. "The one thing we've got to do this year, that we didn't do last year, is produce some runs," he said. "In this region, you don't pitch a shutout." Jenson went on to say that even with good pitching, the teams in Region Six will score runs off you. "It is inevitable. You can't expect to score a run or two and depend on your pitcher for the rest.". The Redmen squad must score four or five runs a game, Jensen said. The key this year will be point producing. Coach Jenson feels he has a team capable of that as he looks to Neil Bladen, David Carter, Gary Alger and Bryce Gubler to be his big bats this year. Jenson also said that Kelly Peterson had been hitting well and should be a great asset to the team. Also looking good in batting practice are senior Kyle Kingsford and junior Kevin Garrett. The Redmen will plaj as many games as they are . allowed to this season, which is 14. Ten of these games will be league matches against Carbon, Dixie, Spanish Fork, Payson and Springville in a home and away situation. The Redmen's first league game will be on March 31, pitting Carbon against Cedar at Cedar. Between now and that time, Cedar will participate par-ticipate in the Dixie Sunshine Tournament in St. George as well as practice games against Hurricane and Tooele. The JV team, under the direction of O'Neil will play a totally different schedule than will the varsity team. The only league team the JV squad will face, is Dixie, The 1981 Cedar High Baseball Team j. fev, :l a..-, .... - .iri. fcijj Bryce Gubler f;-Vf At Vi. David Carter ' u J: i ; Kelly Peterson ByLYNETTE SAWYER Record Reporter Baseball 1981 is right around the corner. Cedar High's program in this sport looks as though it is flourishing. And rightly so. The team will be well-conditioned, well-experienced, well-rounded well-rounded and well-coached. well-coached. Likely starters include, at the catching position, Neil Bladen. Bladen is a returning starter from last year's team and is a senior. Bladen batted .341 for the season last year. Left field will be filled by speedster Gary Alger. Alger is a senior and a returning letterman from last year. His 1980 season batting average was a solid .296. Jenson will serve as head coach of the varsity Redmen team, with coaches Benny O'Neil and Steve Jenson serving as assistants. This able staff will no doubt provide the young Redmen team with the direction they will need. The pitching staff , at CHS looks impressive this season. Along with starting pitchers Gubler starting positions would be determined not only by fielding abilities, but by who is swinging a bat well at that point in the season. Right now, Peterson is hitting very well in practice, according ac-cording to Jensen. Kyle Kingsford will be the starting third baseman for the Redmen. Kyle is a returning letterman for this year's team. He is a senior and is also batting quite well in practice. The starting first baseman will likely be senior Layne Holmes, although Junior Kevin Garrett is also capable of playing the position. Starting pitcher assignments will be rotated between David Carter and Bryce Gubler. Whichever one is not starting will most likely be playing shortstop. Carter finished up the 1980 season with a .333 batting average while Gubler was somewhat behind with a .154 average. Shane Baggs was not a regular player last year, although he did see quite a bit of action for the Reds. It seems likely that Baggs will see more action this year as a starter in center field. The right field slot will be filled by either Dave Lopour, Dirk Lopour, Lyle Harrison, or another team member, said Jenson, depending upon who is hitting the best at the time. Kelly Peterson will be a likely starter in right field or at the second base position. Coach Dave Jenson indicated that CHS: Track team Cedar High track coach Robert Schexnayder indicates that CHS should have a good season in 1981. This optimism is - due to the fine per-. per-. formers returning from last year's team, the coach says. Among returning seniors are standouts Gary Alger, Russ Beatty, Bryce Gubler, Kyle Kingsford, David Carter, Delbert Reeves, Lyle Harrison, Cord Beatty, Dave Lopour and Glen Taylor. According to Schexnayder, Schex-nayder, Gary Alger should be the man to beat in his events in region competition this year. Alger runs the 400-meter dash and finished third in this event last season at region. Rusty Beatty is also outstanding in the 400-meter dash, says Schexnayder. Dan Haynie will also be a real comer in this event. CHS's Bryce Gubler is a strong favorite to win the javelin at region. He placed second last year with a throw of 167 feet. Kevin Garrett and Kyle Kingsford will also be competing in this event for the Redmen. "I'm looking for Dave Carter to win the long jump this year," stated Schexnayder. Carter . : placed second last year at region in this event. The coach also feels the team should be strong in the relays. The team loses just one member of the 400 and medley relays from last year's squad. Returning relay members mem-bers include junior Danny Harris, and seniors Rusty Beatty and David Carter. "In the hurdles, Rick Lunt should surprise a lot of people," said Schexnayder. Schex-nayder. "He is really improved." Also running hurdles are Lyle Harrison, junior Lance Dennett, and sophomore Ben Whitney. Although Danny Harris finished third in the 100-meter 100-meter dash and fourth in the 200-meter dash at regionals last year, he should be favored to win both events this year, said Schexnayder. In the field events, Cedar boasts Burke Jones, Scott Carter, Cord Beatty, Brett Jackson, and Dave Lopour. The high jump prospects look especially good with Glen Taylor, along . with sophomores K.C. Jones and Robert Nakken. Coach Schexnayder is looking for ,. big things from his younger team members. Freshman Greg Bulloch looks good in the 800-meter run, he , says. Sophomore Troy Nielsen should do well in , sprints and relays. This combination of young talent and returning experience should boost Cedar to a liigh place in this season's competition. The CHS girls' track team will face action for the first time in the 1981 season on Wednesday. Coach Vicki Ingram indicated final times would be taken on Friday to determine team members. As of now, every position on the squad is open, she said. Most team hopefuls are working out on their own at this point. Although the girls' team should have quite a few returning members, Cedar High hopes that new members will give the squad the depth it needs to improve last season's record. CHS: Tennis squad Cedar High School's 1981 boy's tennis team boasts some experience, with . three-year team players Neil Mathews, Steve Shirts and David Gregerson on the roster. Two-year player Bill Tsun will also return this season. The team's unanimous decision as to the toughest opposition they will face in the region this year is the squad from Springville High School. Cedar hasn't fared well against the Red Devils in previous seasons. The team feels their experience is probably their greatest asset, while lack of dedication will be their big downfall. "Some players only come when they want to," stated one CHS squad member. "And they're the players we really need." Coach Laura Bailey started out the season as the team's coach, but will relinquish her title to Mike Searil because of her pressing schedule. "How well we do will depend a lot on if we're ranked individually or as a team," commented Bailey. Sophomore and, freshmen players also provide some good material to build future teams with, Bailey said. The Redmen's first match will be on March 31 in Cedar City against Carbon. The Redmen have a possible practice meet scheduled for March . 26. |
