Show T : : SUSC plans 'Telethon X9 fund-raiser Alumni, students, faculty and friends of Southern Utah State College will "call" Telethon X into being March 24 to raise $20,000. "SUSC sponsors a telephone campaign each year to raise scholarship money for students who have proven their academic abilities but are unable to complete their educations because of increasing financial pressures," explained Don Marchant, SUSC alumni president. This year's fund-raising fund-raising venture will be conducted over 12 Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from Mar. 24. to Apr. 16. "We hope to collect $20,000," Marchant continued. "That's money enough to provide 80 . one-half tuition scholarships. Funds raised during Telethon X will be used to award scholarships for the 1981-82 school year," he added, "and will be earmarked for junior and senior students." With one of the biggest tuition increases in recent history and substantially sub-stantially reduced federal financial aid, the money will be especially helpful this year.. Tuition will go up about 12.5 percent, from $462 per year to about $520 per year, while federal financial aid will drop about 20 percent. Last year SUSC students received nearly $2 million from federal financial aid programs. Twenty telephone lines will be set up in the college : administration building for two two-hour sessions nightly. Groups of 24 volunteers will man the phones during each shift, calling all SUSC alumni, parents of students presently enrolled en-rolled at the college and Iron County residents. "Workers are volunteering volun-teering from the SUSC Alumni Association, faculty and staff, student body and community clubs and organizations," Marchant stated. Faculty members participating in the telethon will have an ' extra incentive when they make their phone calls i this year. Any money received through a faculty member will be applied directly to that instructor's department scholarship fund. Otherwise, contributors con-tributors may designate their gifts for specific fields of study and areas of interest or have telethon donations added to the general scholarship fund. "Whatever the con-, tribution, from $5 to a full-tuition scholarship of more than $500, all donations will be very gratefully received," said Marchant. All donations are tax-deductible. |
