Show EdotofoaL Vote of thanks due committee Once again, there are a group of citizens working behind the scenes who we at the Iron County Record feel deserving of commendation. These citizens are the members of the Cedar City Redevelopment Committee. The committee members were appointed by the City Council over one year ago and have since put in numerous hours working toward what they feel to be the best interests of Cedar City and Iron County . The committee is chaired by Dixie Leavitt. The executive secretary is Keith Anderson. Other committee members are Orville D. Carnahan, Conrad V. Hatch, Harold Hiskey, Dee Cowan, Elloyd Marchant, Jack Sawyers, Clair Morris and Charlotte Boyer. In addition, there are various subcommittees, made up of citizens who are putting in much time, completely unpaid, and, unfortunately, many times unappreciated. The Redevelopment Committee, for some reason, is a group which, we feel, many people don't understand. They don't understand what they are doing ; they don't understand the impact they will have. That, we feel, is regrettable, and we would urge citizens of the county to contact members of the committee, to review what they are doing and to have input into policies and actions Like any other public body, the redevelopment committee is in existence simply to serve the public. The impact the committee could have could be stupendous in the future. Feelings have been expressed in some of their meetings that redevelopment could be the only thing that-saves certain downtown businesses in Cedar City, and, perhaps, the entire downtown business district as it currently exists. Certainly, the efforts of the committee will affect all of us. If in no other way, its projects will use some of our tax money. Future increases in taxes owed on properties in the redevelopment district, whether. brought about by raises in taxes or by raises in property value, will go to the redevelopment effort. This includes tax money which would normally go to Cedar City, to Iron County and to the Iron County School District. So a thanks go to those who have given so much time for something they feel is good ; and a suggestion goes out to everybody in the county to find out what is happening in this group. It will affect you. |
