Pitching appears to be adequate with veteran Shawna Mecham, transfer Lori McCurdy (from Dixie College), and Lori Mott, who played outfield last year for the Thunderbirds. Mecham is a senior from Monroe; McCurdy is a junior from Moab; and Mott is a junior from Vernal. Almost certain SUSC starters will be catcher Bonnie Darlington, a junior from Price; second baseman Bonnie Cahill, a senior from ' Fallbrook, Calif; and third baseman Marcia Whiting, a junior from Logan. Not quite certain, but very probable as a starter is freshman Terri Smith, from Brawley, Calif., at shortstop. Starters at the other positions are still up for grabs. Outfielders, however, will probably come from a list that includes Denice Long, sophomor'e, Las Vegas, Nev.; Natalie Smith, senior, Ogden; Joyce Hickman, freshman, Magna; Patty Page, sophomore, South Jordan; Jor-dan; and Mott, if she is not pitching. "Our season is quite short, so we'll have to jump right into it," Osborne says. "We also have a concentrated travel schedule." The first home game is Mar. 25, when the 'Birds host Snow College. Cautiously optimistic is probably the best way to describe the outlook that Bruce Osborne, Southern Utah State College women's Softball coach, has for his team. Osborne, in his first year as coach, started a concentrated 30-game, six-week schedule Friday at St. George against Dixie College. Included in the schedule are two tournaments, an eight-team eight-team affair Mar. 26-28 hosted by Dixie College in St. George, and a four-team four-team meet Apr. 21 in Las Vegas hosted by University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
