SUSC grapplers to host Indians The competition stiffens considerably for the next Southern Utah State College wrestling matches, but the Thunderbirds did get good seasoning last week when they hosted two days of matches. Next up for the 'Bird wrestlers is Adams Stale, the nation's number five ranked team among NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) schools. "There's not many teams around tougher than Adams State; they'll be good for us to test as we begin to prepare for tough conference-meet competition," com-petition," Joe Lopour, T-Bird coach, said. Competition starts at 7:30 p.m. January 22 at War Memorial Fieldhouse. Last week SUSC hosted two days of wrestling that included nine teams, 17 dual matches and 170 individual matches. After all the stress and strain was over, the T-Birds, as a team, finished with two wins and three losses. In a team tournament Friday, SUSC whipped Eastern Utah, 48-6; lost to Mesa (Colo.), 12-22; defeated Snow College, 23-16, 23-16, and then fell to Fort Lewis, 25-13. 25-13. That was good enough to finish fourth in the six-team Friday team tournament. Northeastern Colorado, which went undefeated as a team in the two days, finished first in the tournament. Mesa finished second, Fort Lewis third, SUSC fourth, Snow fifth and CEU sixth. Saturday featured a series of dual matches among the participating par-ticipating schools: Weber State, Western State, Northern Arizona, Fort Lewis, CEU, SUSC, and Northeastern Colorado. Southern Utah competed in only one match Saturday, losing to Northeastern, 11-35. Robert Buatti (126) was selected as SUSC's wrestler of the week for his undefeated record. He finished with four victories and only a tie to mar his two-day record. Other T-Birds who did well in the competition (with their two-day two-day records in parentheses) include Joe Taylor, 134 (4-1); Wayne Hitter, 167 (3 1-1), and Bill Tincher, Heavyweight (4-1). SUSC should pick up strength for the Adams State matches with the return to the lineup of Jack Carlton at 190 pounds. He should be ready after laying out for an injured ankle to heal.
