Show 124th Anniversary Parowan enjoys Birthday Celebration PAKOWAN - Parowan City celebrated her birthday party Monday Jan. 13 with the pioneer day festivities commemorating the 124th birthday of southern Utah's mother town. The day began with a program at the elementary school with Jean Hendrickson telling pioneer stories to the children, the way only she can tell them; and LaMar Jensen singing the song he wrote especially for Parowan's birthday. The children also sang some favorite pioneer songs including Come, Come Ye Saints. The children were dressed in old fashioned dresses with sun bonnets and western shirts chaps and hats. The lunch room served a special dinner of fried chicken and corn bread for the occasion. The celebration at the high school began with a luncheon at 11:30 with a large crowd in attendance. at-tendance. The program began at 1:00 p.m. with guest speaker Dr. Morris Rowley relating many interesting facts about Parowan's beginnings. The High School band and Madrigals also participated in the program. Frank Mortensen acted as M.C. for the program, representing the Sons of the Utah Pioneers. At 2 p.m. the high school drama department presented a delightful melodrama that kept the audience enthralled for the hour it lasted. The villan was booed and the hero cheered. Cast for the presentation was as follows: Heroine - Little Nell Wilkins -Holly Robinson. Hero - Hector Skyscraper - Ed Walunas. Ma Wilkins - Lori Humphries Pa Wilkins - Ted Cooke. Villan - Car ge - Jeff Johnson Stage Manager - Phil Her-mansen Her-mansen Prompter - Bruce Topham. Director was Richard Johnson. At 3:15 an "old time dance" was held in the PHSgym with the Paragonah orchestra furnishing the music. Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Decker were in town for the holiday so Mr. Decker joined the group with his violin. Dancers from 9 to 90 joined in dancing "Ten Pretty Girls" and "Danish Slide Off". Polkas and waltzes tested the skill of the students and a good tii.-e was had by everyone. Parowan is one year older and residents here are very proud of the brave pioneers who arrived here in the middle of a very cold January One Hundred and Twenty Four years ago. |
