Conductor debuts with symphony Conductor The next Utah Symphony Classical Series concerts will combine the talents of guest conductor Robert Spano and violinist Gerald Elias. W J 1 J Robert Spano The concerts will be March 26 and 27 at 8 p.m. in Abravanel Halt The featured soloist on the program will be Associate Concertmaster Gerald Elias. In Winners to be V. II I the tradition of spotlighting the orchestra's own talented musicians, Elias will perform Dvorak's Romance and Ravel's Tzigane. Elias joined the Utah Symphony in 1988 as Associate Concertmaster. Before that, he was with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Presently, Spano is also associated with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, as Assistant Conductor, and during the 1992-93 season, in addition to the Utah Symphony, he will conduct the orchestras of Denver, Columbus, Florida and New Jersey. Spano made his debut in 1991 when he substituted for ailing conductor Klaus Tennstedt on a few days notice. He was able to conduct the scheduled program and thus he came to the attention of the music world. Tickets are $10 to $30 at the Utah Symphony Box Office, 533-NOTE, or at all Smith'sTix locations. If available, students with a current ID may purchase tickets for $5. This concert will also be performed Thursday, March 25, at 8 p.m. in the Browning Center for the Performing Arts on the Weber State University campus in Ogden. Aae Categories: Lynn Redgrave to perform Shakespeare Everyone has memories of their fathers. Actress Lynn Redgrave's memories happen to include a lot of Shakespeare. At 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 25, Redgrave will share some of her thoughts, feelings and memories of her father in a critically-acclaimed, one-woman show entitled, Shakespeare For My Father. Her father, Sir Michael Redgrave, was a world-famous Shakespearean actor in England. The evening includes some of Shakespeare's best-loved verse, tied into the life story of Sir Michael Redgrave and his relationship to his daughter. Redgrave herself is no stranger to the theater, movies and television. She received an Oscar nomination for her role in Georgy Girl. She has also received two Emmy Student art exhibit at Westminster Westminster College of Salt Lake City is hosting their annual Student Art Exhibit, featuring the works of students enrolled in art classes at the college. On display will be paintings, drawings, watercolors, photographs and pottery. The exhibit is from April 1-17 in the Jewett Center for the Performing Arts (1250 East 1700 South). Daily exhibit hours are Monday through Friday noon to 3 p.m. and also in the evenings April 14 through 17, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend. Westminster College Pottery Department is sponsoring the biannual bi-annual pottery sale on April 6, 1993. The sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Shaw Center Lounge and continue at 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Gore building, both on the Westminster campus. Included in the sale will be pottery items such as clay Easter baskets, goblets, bowls, mugs, pitchers, porcelain wind chimes, bells, and ceramic jewelry. Arrive early for the best selection. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Utah AIDS Foundation and Wasatch Humane. John 3 to the Park Record "Art as therapy" will be exhibited "All my life I've wanted a cave full of treasures; since I haven't found one yet, I decided to draw my own." --Joey "A Cave Full of Treasures" is the theme of a children's traveling art exhibit on display at Sunrise Elementary School, 1520 East 1 1265 South, Sandy, through April 16. The next destination for the exhibit is Glendale Intermediate School, 1430 West Andrew Avenue, from April 19 through May 11. The display was assembled from select pieces of art created by : ' children in residential treatment by Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Primary Children's Medical Center. This treatment program provides a highly structured environment for children who are emotionally disturbed, unable to function at home and in need of long term care. The art program is facilitated by Louise Fischman, artist and therapeutic art educator. "The better guality of art they can produce, the more effective it can be in expressing their feelings," Fischman explains. "Art gives them another language to communicate." The exhibit features a variety of art forms including acrylic paintings, water colors, collages and mixed-media. The art therapy program is funded by Very Special Arts Utah, the Utah Arts Council, the George S. and Delores Dore Eccles Foundation and Primary Children's Medical Center. Hogle Zoo plans kids' events "Easter at the Zoo," will take place on Saturday, April 10 from " 10a.m.2p.m; atHogleZoo. The Easter Bunny will be hopping around the Discovery Center with plenty of treats for the kids. All children under 12 will receive a ticket at the Zoo's admission gate that can be redeemed for a plastic egg containing a small prize. "Easter at the Zoo" is sponsored by Q99FM radio. Another event will be the "Great Balls of Foil" Ceremony, set for Saturday, April 24 at 10 a.m. Winners of the "Great Balls of Foil" recycling contest will be announced at Hogle Zoo's Pavilion area. The contest gives elementary and middle school students a chance to earn cash for their schools by recycling and building the largest ball of aluminum foil. The winning entries will be on display throughout the day.
