Show The Park Record Q Section B For the week of March 25 through April J B1 D Thursday, March 25, 1993 Rastafari responsibility Rocky Mountain style by TOM CRAM Record guest writer 'm a sucker for a band with a message. It I doesn't even matter what the message is, as f long as they really believe in what they are doing. Half the fun of following a band is watching them dig themselves a philosophical or theological hole. Bands like Deicide or Morbid Angel spouting off about devil worship, U2 or Stryper espousing their unshakaole belief in God. All this is almost as entertaining as the music itself. The 8750 Reggae Band has a message but it is much more down to earth. Messages like love your neighbor, truth, ecology, and human rights. These beliefs have been bandied about as of late, until they have pretty much lost their meaning. 8750 hopes to keep the meaning alive. Unity, (or I-nity according to 8750 gospel) is not just an ideal, it is a necessity. While any reggae band worth their salt espouses these beliefs, 8750 isn't just any reggae band. 8750 is an unusual mongrel; all white, co-ed,' Jah-praising, average suburban, dread-sporting, Sensi-smoking, ski-bums. Not what your usual white band consists of.(Except maybe the Sensi part. The members of the band are; Rasta Stevie ( drums, vocals.) Dave 'Bassie' Christeson ( Keys, vocals, bass.) Bridget 'Sister Love Holvenstot (steel pan, keys vocals.) Ras Andrew ( bass, vocals, bubble guitar.) Knox Robbie (lead guitar, electric mandolin.) John 'Hoony' Hoonhout (vocals, guitars, keys, drums.) The band lyrics are pointed in a social direction. Calls for reasonably-priced housing, brotherhood, and the all-important booty Iff II III J ' shaking are in evidence. For example the chorus of "Housing' . Housing crisis no rooms to rent. Just on food me money fe spent. Housing crisisreality, price so high , I just can't pay. This 'everyday' social consciousness is the rule rather than the exception. All of these commentaries are set to an enticing beat. "Entertainment is first ," says Bassie, "when people come to a show, they see I-nity at work in our lives. We don't preach to them, but living our lives as Rasta seven days a week 365 days a year, we put out the information to check out, but not by force." 8750's CD release Music and Lyrics Are The Shield And Sword,is chock full of music-as-ritual. We are serious about our message, but not too serious to have fun," says Hoony. The 8750 Reggae Band creates positive dance music while telling truths they feel must be revealed. The message is sometimes serious, sometimes humorous, but always captivating. The band will be making a stop in Park City at Z Place Saturday March 27. If you enjoy your entertainment with a little social awareness thrown in, check them out. If the message gets lost on you, at least you'll get to shake your butt, mon.
