School District cuts $707,750 i . , J The Teton County School Board on Thursday approved $707,750 in budget cuts for the 1993-94 school year, I eliminating five local teaching positions to work toward an $1 1.86 million budget next year. I All told, seven teachers, a part-time nurse, and a part-time counselor will lose their jobs next year, but two of I those jobs will be filled by school principals who have accepted teaching positions. 1 The School Board also agreed to raise $ 100,000 locally so more extensive cuts would not be necessary in the I Teton Science School program, the high-school dance program, the gifted and talented services, Western wyuiiwig ruga duiuui, ana auueacs. , , Nonetheless, all of those programs, except the alternative high school, still were cut somewhat. "This has been a painful month for us," School Board Trustee Linda Williams said. 6 But all five board members at Thursday's meeting agreed there was no choice but to cut because of deficit spending in recent years, during which time the state's allocation to schools has not kept pace with the district's rising annual costs. . , This year, the Board is spending an estimated $601, 518 of its $2.78 million reserves. Even though the Wyoming Legislature allocated an additional $237,000 to Teton County for the coming year, Teton County Superintendent Tom Nelson said it will not affect the cuts because it is net enough to offset deficit spending. m THE &L TRAIL 3 I Prosecutor questions mayors residency Ketchum Mayor Can Hamilton's dual residences in and outside the city have attracted the attention of the Blaine County Prosecutor's office.
