After more than 30 years of broadcasting from cramped quarters on the University of Utah campus, KUED channel 7 and KUER FM90 are moving into a new state of the art facility on the east bench of the University. The new Dolores Dore Eccles Broadcast Center, one of the foremost public telecommunications systems in the nation, houses all public bradcast entities operated by the university of utah media services department under one roof, including KUED and KUER, KULC, Channel 9 and EDNET, Utah's statewide education microwave system. The broadcasters are moving into the building in shifts. KUED's creative services and development depertments, the University Media Services and KUER, which began broadcasting from the new building on March 1 are already in the Eccles center. KULC and EDNETwill move into the facility between march 19 and 22. KUED wil begin broadcasting from the building on March 28, with all production, programming and administrative offices moved in by April 1. Construction of the $8.6 million building, one of the finest of it's kind in the nation, was completely funded through private gifts, with the state and university providing funds for new equipment The building was made possible through generous community support, most notably a $5.5 million gift from Dolores Dore Eccles plus gifts from more than 2,000 corporations, foundations, and private individuals. All employees at KUED, KUER, KULC, and media services donated to the broadcast center, which "just goes to show how much we've been wanting this building," says John Greene, general manager of KUER. Remarkably the building which has been called one of the crown jewels in the PBS system cost 50 percent less than other facilities of its type, "we're told that normally these buildings cost $220 per square foot we built it for $110--about half," says Stephen Hess, executive director of media services. Over the last three decades the University of Utah's public radio and television stations and broadcast facilities have established themselves as information and education gateways to the Intermountain West "The Eccles broadcast center allows for capabilities not possible in our former quarters," says KUED general manager Fred Esplin. "Bringing the broadcast facilities together in a single facility adds immeasurably to the local production capacity, greater cost efficiency and extends all of our broadcast srvices to a new level. In every way, the viewing and listening audiences of Utah and the Intermountain West stand to gain. The stations had long ago outgrown makeshift quarters in the basements of Kingsbury Hall and Gardner Hall. Since they went on the air the stations have expanded considerably, adapting rooms that were never designed for broadcasting. For example KUED'S main studio room is the old campus cafeteria, now piled high with props and equipmentAnd KUER's studio for panel discussions doubled as the stations conference and lunch room. The 66,000 square foot Eccles Broadcast Center provides two sizeable TV studios, a radio studio, three radio production rooms three television editing suites, on air control rooms, audio and video libraries, a multi-media facility, computer graphics room, tele conference . room, telecommunications switching center, satellite comunications, set and equipment storage facilities as well as facilities for student training. "We'll all be working together to better serve the citizens of Utah and neighboring states as a telecommunications center that links public radio and television, video teleconferencing, instructional and training programs, satellite communications and statewide computer services," says Esplin.
