Coil was my first introduction to 4AD's roster. If this article is your introduction to Coil; it is both a good time and a shame. 4 AD is releasing a boxed set of their complete catalog. This body of music, when viewed retrospectively, is nothing short of genius. If I seem effusive, it is not without reason. This is music that spans musical-cultural references; it is at home on a boom box as well as a towering audiophile's rack. If the band is Eurocentric, it is simply because they are from Europe. It is not out of any musical fascism. Just as a blues man is a product and commentator of his environment, Coil comments on their peculiar view of the world. This view speaks to me. This Mortal Coil opens doors to landscapes, broad expanses of sky, deep oceans, hoary chunks of earth I've seen only in dreams. Their music is ever-changing. Full instrumentation on one song, a capella on another. Come To Me My Love, The Jeweller, and Song To The Siren, are examples of songs that transport the listener, songs that invite emotional participation. The band's membership is as liquid as their music. Musicians wash in and out like the tide. Somehow the band retains a cohesiveness despite the revolving-door revolving-door lineup. One could get caught up in the band's mechanics, like who plays what and where, or what exactly does Ivo do? But to do so would be a sharp focus on incidentals, the same as narrowing in on a single dot in a photograph, to the exclusion of the f ' ml ft - LONE PEEK This new home is found in the Historic District steps from the town lift base & the bottom of Main Street Featuring 3 bedrooms & 2.5 baths, this home has hardwood floors & solid fir doors.
