Show Page C2 D Thursday, March 25,1993 The Park Record Section C ILdDSit Sun drees... by Alex Wells Swimmers roll in Jr. Olympics Parents, Gene Creations and lungfish... In two weeks I will switch from sports coverage to deserves, arts and leisure. Before I stop working on this section, I plan to jot down a few comments and recollections from my three-and-a-half years of covering sports here. What follows is Part I of a very short series: The most difficult part of this job is answering the phone. The callers who are irate usually say "yes" instead of "hello." After the sports writer says "hello," they say "yes." "Yes" is the plug in the dam of words--once it comes out, everything that has been building up in the caller, bursts forth. Most of the irate callers are parents who want to see pictures of their Gene Creations GC's in the paper. They will sometimes settle for a mention of their GC s m print. The job of The Park Record's sports writer is to name as many Gene Creations as possible in a five-page five-page section. Invariably, the sports writer will not have enough room for all the names, and will hear from parents who use "yes" as a greeting. Sometimes a Gene Creation will be featured too far back in the pages of the section. When this happens, the GC's name may be lost in history, like James Buchanan. Just as there are eccentric historians who organize annual James Buchanan celebrations, there are parents who strive to ensure that a Gene Creation's deeds, however trivial, are never forgotten. They fight to make sure the GC gets the recognition he There are no official statistics kept on the number of newspaper references to each parent's Gene Creations. If there were, these standings would be of much greater interest to this community than golf results, which appear on these pages weekly during summer. In these standings, a parent might receive points each time his Gene Creation turned up in stories, in headlines or in pictures. Family portraits would be worth double points. To enter its own Gene Creation in the race, a couple needs only to procreate, an act that, for men, is much easier than training. The GC's themselves are oblivious to the hullabaloo over publicity. They are too busy spending their parents' money. They don't realize that someday they will have Gene Creations of their own. Likewise, the parents often forget that they are the Gene Creations of their parents and of thousands of generations before them. They never consider the possibility that their family's athletic inclination might have descended from an especially agile lungfish or an extra-slimy pre-amphibian. The parents who call have good intentions. When their Gene Creations succeed, their world shines. They want the whole world to share their joy. This reporter will miss talking to some of them-the them-the ones who don't use "yes" as a greeting. Local swimmers Kelly Wells, Amber Crosby and Jennifer Meakins had impressive results this past weekend at the Utah Junior Olympics held at the Steiner Aquatic Center. Competing in the 11 -12 age group, Wells joined three teammates in setting new state records in the 200-yard medley relay, the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay. Wells, who races for the Steiner Tsunami Aquatic Team, also earned individual medals in the 200 free (second place) and the 100 butterfly (third place). Her efforts earned her sixth place overall in the 1 1-12 girls high-point awards. Crosby, who swims for Cottonwood Heights, finished second in the SO back and 7th in the 50 free in the 11-12 age group. She also swam on two second-place relay teams and one third-place relay team. Meakins, a teammate of Crosby's on the Cottonwood team, turned in her best performances of the season, finishing in the top six of the high-point competition for girls 9-10. In individual events she placed third in the 100 breast, fourth in the 200 IM and 50 breast, fifth in both the 200 free and 100 free, 7th in the 50 free and 11th in the 100 IM. Cottonwood Heights Aquatic Team won the team competition with Steiner Tsunami finishing second. ritt Do you know what your Business is Worth?
