Show Thursday, March 25, 1993 Page B3 32S Homeward Bound is no Incredible Journey r by ANDREA MATHER Record staff writer The Park Record Section B Two dogs and a cat set out on a journey for home through the wilderness. What could be child (or "inner child") more fare than that? The Disney classic, the Incredible Journey has been remade. Unlike other classics, the studio opted to redo it rather than re-release re-release it. And I am not so sure they should have. The remake-Homeward remake-Homeward Bound: the Incredible Journey- does not replace the original. Maybe Disney assumed the audience would have a hard time relating to the "1963ness" as well as "Canadianness" of the first film. The studio must have thought today's kids would not sit still without having the animals speak English to one another so actors' voices are a feature of the remake. Instead of being endearing in the campy tradition of Mr. Ed, the technique was distracting and annoying. It didn't help that Michael J. Fox and Sally Field, who are irritating enough normally, were the puppy and cat voices. At one point in the journey, Fox says he is so tired he is "too pooped to poop." This was a calculated move to revert to scatological humor just for a giggle. At another point, Fox refers to a mountain lion as a Schwartz-negger Schwartz-negger kitty. Instead of being "real", it again seems calculated. In the first film, the Siamese cat Tao (which the actors refer to as TAY-OH rather than Dow) does many inherently catlike things such as running along a top of the fence or slowing down and then bounding ahead. Anyone who has ever had a cat or taken a walk with a cat can recognize these feline moves. In the remake, the cat does not have the same sort of fun personality. The actual animals' facial expressions and antics take a back seat to the human voices. The original allows you to really study if', Ml 7J: ;.. Considering the fact that 10 cat actors played the role of the Himalayan, Sassy, it seems as though one of them would have been more natural. The least (two) Taos were "real." In both the original movie and the Sheila Burnford book the tales are based on, the bull terrier and the cat are buddies. The cat is always seeking out the dog and sleeping next to it The second film does not have the same sense of camaraderie. The new movie does develop the relationship between the pets' owners (three siblings) and animals more fully. Furthermore, the human actors in the new version are better actors. If you are looking for a movie to share with your kids, I would recommend renting the original and the Japanese cat and dog adventure Milo and Otis and go for a double feature. Or if you have a very small family, I would take them to the matinee showing of Homeward Bound: the Incredible Journey and look forward to the popcorn. 94 So. Main.
