The skiers, who have come here from thoughout the nation, will be taking courses and skiing. They may travel to Salt Lake City to hear the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, or walk down to Main Street from their rooms at the Chateau Apres to take in a show by Park City performances. The daily schedule starts at 8:30 a.m. and often continues well into the evening. And the participants, most of whom are over 60, say they enjoy every minute of it "We're a bunch of old duffers that are here to ski for the week," said Janet Hillelson of Boca Raton, Fla., who is on her 68th Elderhostel trip. UVCC organizes sessions Park City is one of hundreds of locations worldwide that host Elderhostel, a continuing-education continuing-education program for people over 60. The classes here are offered through Utah Valley Community College (UVCC) in conjunction with the national Elderhostel system. In Park City the program continues to grow. This year, UVCC has scheduled consecutive week-long ski sessions in March (the second week is currendy in session), tennis in spring, golf in summer, and a combination of hot-air hot-air ballooning and geology instruction in fall. Part of the attraction of the sessions is the low price-the week of Park City skiing, lodging, meals and lessons cost $330, and other sessions are comparably priced. The low prices are made possible by booking space during the "shoulder seasons" at resorts, and through the cooperation of local merchants. SALES OFFICE (EAUOi "It takes a commitment on the part of the merchants and the instructors to make it work," said Marva Loy Eggett, Elderhostel specialist at UVCC. "Park City has been terrific. We appreciate what Park City has done." Focus on skiing In this week's Elderhostel, the participants spend four hours each day working to improve their skiing, with help from eight instructors at the Park City Ski Area. Instructor Jack Wells, who is 71, leads the skiing program, in which lessons are tailored not only to the skill levels of the participants but also to their needs as older skiers. At the Resort Center March 23, Wells was preparing to give 60-year-old Ann Durkin her first ski lesson. Durkin's husband had convinced her to try the sport, and she admitted to being a bit nervous in the moments before her lesson. "As soon as I realized Jack was my instructor I realized it would be all right," said Durkin. Last week, Hal Compton offered a course on Park City history. This week, to avoid repeating himself to participants who have stayed for both weeks, Compton will discuss the history ofUtah. In addition to the computer sessions, David Chaplin will teach two "Art Smart" classes designed to enhance each participant's understanding of art, and Billie Nelson will direct an introduction to Word PerfecL , Chaplin will have a difficult time topping Ken McCarthy of White Pine Touring, who last week gave Elderhostel participants a. lesson on avalanche dynamics. "A nice young man from the nordic center gave a discussion on snow pits and avalanches," recalled Madelyn Econome of Albany, N.Y. She added that the class was "very interesting." , Stratton captures comb i Men Stratton of Park City took top honors in the combined in the 45-49 age group at the 1993 Subaru U.S. Alpine Masters Championships Champion-ships March 8-13 at Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
