Show The Materna Concert There was only a medium house to hear the famous Wagnerian singer Saturday Satur-day night but the audience was appreciative appreci-ative and sympathetic The interest of the evening centered in Mme Materna and a few words will suffice for the others of her troupe The playing of Mr Rose wald was good but without any brilliancy liancy the thing which makes a violinist Sig Villanis singing was likewise good but he is a little too throaty as singers term the manner and few of his notes came from the chest Miss Stevens piano playing was very ordinary and such as not to merit the name of professional profes-sional I may well be called slouchy while her manner of exit was detestable Mme Materna herself was good but we imagine that she is entirely out of place in concert for in concert she could never have made the reputation she enjoys Her voice is full and strong and she is never without great reserve force in reaching her upper registers Her voice has not the fine quality that so distinguishes distin-guishes Pattis voice She could not sing Pattis operas nor could Patti sing hers Her reputation rests upon her rendition of Wagners works and to judge of her when not in her proper sphere is unjust She is gracious on the stage and the ready and willing manner in which she responded to calls for an encore won the good will of all Had it not been for the circus she would have had a much better house although her audience was composed com-posed of the best of society |
