Show TWO SYMPATHIZERS When American newspapers discuss English politics two things arc always noticeable Democratic newspapers as a rule uphold the Liberals in English politics while Republican newspapers asa as-a rule side with the Tories Why it should be so is difficult to say but a partial par-tial explanation of the matter may be given The Tories arc the part who entertains en-tertains great ideas of foreign conquests con-quests and universal empire They arc the party who deems all things subordinate to the idea of its manifest destiny of ruling and reforming re-forming the world Its ideas are the only ideas and must be accepted without question by all and if people do not choose to accept them voluntarily they must accept them involuntarily in-voluntarily It is the party who holds that government is greater than man and that man is but an instrument of government govern-ment with them government is the end man the means It is the party who maintains that the welfare of man individual in-dividual is not the object of government govern-ment With that party liberty is a thing that is bestowed by the government and to which man has no right unless so bestowed be-stowed It is the party who mistrusts the citizen and thinks him harmless only when restrained as much as possible possi-ble With that party Gods will is class I privilege To belong to another party and to hold different ideas is to be red republican or communistic The Liberal party in England is the very reverse of this It is the party who holds that in England itself lies Englands greatness It asks that its ideas be accepted ac-cepted for their intrinsic worth and I deems that it has no divine right to rule Its object is the betterment of the condition condi-tion of the citizen finding in the welfare of the citizen the welfare of the government govern-ment With the Liberal party liberty is a thing that belongs to every man and which the government should protect him in It is the party who I believes that in politics Gods will is I the peoples will it is the party who does not think that all is going to destruction because it may not be in power It be lieves in the goodness of human nature and not in the badness of it It is plain to see then why the two political par I tics in this country sympathize as they I do in the matter of English politics The II I Republican party is the one who believes in government as government while the I Democratic party believes in the people and sees in government only an institution I institu-tion created by themselves for themselves |
