Show IN HAWKS HAW HANDS Tim Perpetrator of the St Louis Trunk Horror Run Down at Last IV II Lennox Maxwell Arrested at Auckland New Zealand A Valise Full of Bloody Evidence to Show He Murdered Preller Another Act in the Trunk Tragedy SAN FRANCISCO June litThe steamer City 0 f Sydney from Australia arrived this morning with Sydney dates of May 21st and Auckland New Zealand May 2Gth The Auckland papers contain an account of the arest on May 5th of Walter H Lennox Maxwell alias Theodore Cecil Dauguier CHAEGED WITH HAYING MUEDEEED CHARLES A lRELLER In St Louis The arrest was made by United States Consul Gamble who received a telegram from the chief of police at St Louis with instructions to that effect Two days later Consul Gamble received a telegram tele-gram from the United States Secretary of State authorizing him to make tho arrest Two detectives boarded the steamer at Tir itiri and the purser in reply to their questions ques-tions stated there was a man among the answering Maxwells steerage passengers description The man was summoned on deck and tho first question asked him was whether he was a physician He promptly denied this saying he was a native of Prance and an officer of the French army The detectives informed him that they had a warrant for his arrest and would have to take him into custody MAXWELL APPEAKED TO BE DISCO CERTED But recovered his composure while the officers were handcuffing him coolly remarking re-marking that the whole matter was a mistake mis-take which would be quickly explained On May 5th he was brought into the police away court and the charges against him read The Crown solicitor appeared for the prosecution Messrs Napier and Barton for the defense and the latter claimed that tho court had no jurisdiction After some argument argu-ment the case was remanded to the 7th after remanded to the 11th which it was again On that day the case was again brought witness Consul Gamble was tho first up called He testified on behalf of tho prosecution I prose-cution as to tho various articles found in Maxwells trunk which among other things contained two embroidered handkerchiefs I two marked C A P and a shirt with I spots of blood on tho tail In reply to largo as to how tho articles not bear I the question into the initials of his name had come ing his possession Maxwell said they had GIVEN TO HIM IN SAN FKANCISCO Robinson named By a man y Twohy one of tho two who arrested Detective find steamer testified to him tho rested ing the following on articles in Maxwells grip handkerchiefs rhirt four cufis two sack Thirtyfour book all marked C A P a memorandum Dauguior pocket medical dictionary marked Max written NY H Lennox in which was F A H C S and a dressing well M D All Maxwell Lennox AY H marked I case articles Maxwell said ho bought of these Robinson in San Fran from the same man in at this point m Counsel for defense cisco ain contended that the the proceedings again in the matter and jurisdiction had no court dismissal of tho case It was asked for a that day remanded to May 1Gth on then to the 30th that day to the 23d and again on Smith who is hearing the case Judge that he would remand it eight days stated officers from St Louis at a time until the arrived |
