Show Result of Study Groups examined; Parents tour of Schools planned Results of four extensive study groups and plans for tours of the three Cedar City Elementary Schools were announced this week hy Mrs. Dallen Gardner, President of the South Elementary Parent Teachers Association and general chairman of a committee to determine educational specifications for the proposed South . Elementary School. Four committees have been developing ' study reports on various aspects of the educational advantages of various programs and results of those studies will be, prepared and distributed throughout t the Iron County School System, Mrs. , Gardner indicated. In addition plans have been made for residents of the area to visit the three-EJementary. three-EJementary. schools in Cedar City on Wednesday, March 31 from 9-12 noon. - At that time tours of the three elementary schools will be provided by the " principals beginning at 9 a.m. It is suggested that parents begin at the school which their children attend and if they , would like to visit other schools that they rotate from school to school throughout the day., Ongoing programs in the schools will be explained and efforts of the various , faculties, along with objectives of the programs, will be detailed. Mrs. Gardner indicates that' the committee com-mittee reports are expected to be com: pleted by the end of the month and that the information compiled by the committees , will then be prepared in written form and disseminated to the public. The general committee indicated that , following the dissemination of the written material that a public meeting, or meetings would be held at which time additional public input would be accepted. The Iron County School Board, according ac-cording to J. Clair Morris, superintendent . will (hen evaluate the materials, and assess the wants of the people before finalizing the educational specification that will be provided for the architect for the development of the new South Elementary and'possibly future additions and schools in the district. The four basic study areas that are presently being considered were listed by Mrs. Gardner, as follows: 1. Open Space and . Conventional Classrooms. The committee is expected to develop information pointing out the advantages and disadvantages of .each; possible combination of both concepts for the benefit of students plus information concerning, national trends and achievement comparisons. 2. Programs and Needed Space. Being considered by this committee is the fundamentals of the 3 R's, Social Studies, Science, Vocal and Instrumental Music, Physical Education, Art, Industrial Arts I and Media Center-with special emphasis I on space needs to accomplish programs, I 3. Economics and Future Planning.' I Being developed here is what types' of I space are most economical, what can the district afford and how can we provide for flexibility for future programs. 4. Team and Individual Teaching. The advantages of both will be reviewed with the concept of how can the talents of all teachers best be utilized. Also being , considered by the committee is how are slow learners handled in . both types of teaching situations, how individual differences dif-ferences are handled and the questions are also being considered as to whether it is good to have the same teacher all year, Qr to have different teachers at the . elementary level. Information on the availabiltiy of the committee reports will be announced in the near future along with scheduled public meetings, Mrs. Gardner emphasized. |
