Show T-Birds win one lose fourgames on California trip; face Badgers next By Jim Bayly Standing with a record of 7-4, Southern Utah State's baseball team opens the home portion tf its 1976 schedule Tuesday (March 30) with a double-header against Snow College. First game action gets underway un-derway at 1 :00 p.m. on Municipal Field. The T-Birds defeated the Badgers twice earlier this season in St. George, both times by scores of 3-2. Coach Cleo Petty's squad managed only one win during its recent swing ' to Southern California, but the T-Birds could have won all five. Southern California College recorded 4-2 and 4-1 wins with the T-Birds winning 1-0. University of California-Irvine knocked off the "Birds" 3-1 and 6-2. "I was pleased with our pitching, pit-ching, but our bats didn't come ' through when we needed them," states Petty. Righthander LaRon Unck turned in an excellent performance per-formance as he hurled the nine inning shutout over SCC. Unck yielded nine singles, struck out four, and didn't walk a man. Righthander Jim Tillotson also turned in a fine performance against UCI. He was a 3-1 loser. Tillotson worked eight innings, gave up seven hits, struck out five and walked two, but the T-Birds T-Birds could only manage three hits. Senior shortstop Brent Loveless leads the T-Bird hitting attack with .350 batting average. He leads SUSC in at bats (40), hits (14) and runs scored (12). . Mike Marini, junior outfielder, is hitting .314 and leads the squad in both home runs (3) and runs batted in (14). Marini drove in the only run against SCC in the T-Bird T-Bird 1-0 victory. Unck leads the T-Bird hurlers with a 2-0 record and a 1.20 ERA while Tillotson is 1-1 and has a 1.80 ERA. BYU moves into Cedar City Saturday, April 3, for a double-header. |
