Show 1 BISMARCKS BIRTHDAY Today the German Chancellor is 70 years of age having been born in 1815 the year in which Napoleon fell Bismarck Bis-marck or rather Prince Otto von Bis marckSchonhausen is the most prominent i promi-nent figure in European politics today and being so it may not be out of place to give a synopsis of his life At Berlin and Gottengen he pursued and completed his studies in jurisprudence In 1848 the year of revolutions throughout Europe Eu-rope he was a member of the Constituent Assembly of Prussia from 1851 to 1859 he was Minister Plenipotentiary from Prussia at the Diet of Frankfort a id from 1859 to 1862 was Ambassador to the I Court of St Petersburg and during part I this year was Prussian Ambassador to the Court of Napoleon III but on September 23 1862 he became Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chief of the Council of Ministers Min-isters of Prussia From 1867 to 1870 he was Chancellor of the North German Confederation and became Chancellor of the Empire January 191871 Since the FrancoPrussian war Bismarck i marck has been the central figure in European I Eu-ropean politics and the controlling one as well In diplomatic affairs he has been bold and fearless totally unlike I Talleyrand and Mettenrich and the Macchiavelli school although he is master mas-ter of diplomatic finesse and knows when and how to use it he prefers his own method a method that in future will be i known as Bismarckian Since German has been the acknowleged military power of Europe Bismarck has amused himself by making various combinations among the different powers and then unmaking them keeping all things in a perpetual turmoil Of late he has turned his attention to the renovation and revolution of the internal I in-ternal affairs of the Empire and has started and experimented with all economic I eco-nomic theories from socialism to prohibitive prohi-bitive protection He has and is constantly con-stantly playing fast and loose with the laboring class and with the landlords But whatever may be said of Bismarck and his policies it will always be said of him that he was one of the great men of the world men who are destined to form and fashion nations and make epochs |
