FREE, newly-elected president of the Sugar House Chamber of Commerce. One of the best-liked men in the Sugar House business world, Ray Free, brings to the office of Chambejj. president the rich ; experience of seven years as a ! leader in the civic, social, church 1 and business affairs of the com- munity and five years as a U. S. Army officer. ! Born Jan. 10, 1910, in western Idaho, Mr. Free is the son of J. Ray and Jennie D. Free. He was educated in southeast schools, attending the Forest and Columbus grade schools and Irving and East High schools. He is a 1935 graduate of the University of Utah where he took his BA degree in languages. He was active in student affairs, af-fairs, being president of the Sigma Sig-ma Pi social fraternity, vice president of Scabbard and Blade, campus military organization, organ-ization, Delta Phi and an active member of Interfraternity Council. Coun-cil. In June, 1935, Mr. Free went to work for Hygeia Ice Company of which company, today, he is assistant manager. Veteran of Four Campaigns In December, 1940, Mr. Free I was called to active duty with I the field artillery. As a member mem-ber of famed "Hour Glass" Seventh Sev-enth Division, Mr. Free saw service in four major campaigns in the Pacific, including Attu (May, 1943)', the Marshall Islands Is-lands (Jan., 1944), the Philippines, Philip-pines, (Oct., 1944), and Okinawa. He served as battery and battalion bat-talion commander, plans and training officer and executive officer, among others. He was twice' decorated; Purple Heart, Attu; Bronze Star, Philippines. Going in as a first lieutenant Mr. Free finished his military career in August, 1945, as a Lieutenant-colonel. In civic and organizational affairs af-fairs of the community Ray Free has been an outstanding member. mem-ber. He is a charter member of the Sugar House Lions Club and this year serves as chairman of its membership committee. He has served the local Chamber of Commerce in the offices of first and second vice presidents. For two years he has represented Sugar Su-gar House in the Red Cross drive, in 1946, as campaign chairman". He" is president of the alumni of Sigma Pi fraternity. frater-nity.
