Show Salt Lake Voters Elect Incumbents for Second Term Reelection of Salt Lake City's incumbent mayor, safety and water commissioners by emphatic majorities broke political precedent prec-edent in Tuesday's election finals. Mayor Glade was given a vote of confidence by over 24,000 voters as he defeated former mayor (1940-1944) Ab Jenkins by more than 7000 votes. Public Safety Commissioner L. C. Romney received the greatest number of votes of any of the candidates as he led in the commission race. Water Commissioner David A. Affleck also received a resounding majority as he led his nearest competitor by over 10,000 votes. Unofficial count of The Salt Lake Tribune-Telegram for the 184 districts was: For mayor Glade, 24,148; Jenkins, 17,379. For commissioners Romney, 25,947; Affleck, 24.37S; Newell Knight, 14,671; Elmer G. Thomas, Thom-as, 14,551. Precedents Broken Two 36-year-old precedents were overridden in Tuesday's v election when Salt Lake voters i elected its incumbent mayor for a second term and its public safety commissioner, after he had served a full term. These records date from 1912 when the commission form of government was adopted in Salt Lake. Mayor Glade, one of southeast's south-east's most prominent citizens who lives at 2610 Highland Drive, was the founder and publisher pub-lisher of the old East Salt Lake Times over 20 years ago. His interest in local newspaper development de-velopment has been considerable consider-able ever since that time. He has always been an ardent supporter sup-porter or southeast Salt Lake, serving in many local capacities. Outstanding Record Mr. Glade's record while mayor may-or of Salt Lake is well known. He was professor of business at the University of Utah; founder and managing director of Radio Station Sta-tion KSL from its inception in 1930 until he became the mayor of Salt Lake in 1943. |
