Show Sugar House Enters Business, Residential Expansion Period A new business every week, seems to be the motto of Southeast Salt Lake, as an unprecedented building and business expansion w-ent into full steam recently. Highland Drive and 21st South are the focal points of the growth, but many other streets have seen shopping centers and retail establishments spring up during the last few months. A recent Bulletin survey shows that there is an interesting variety in the types of new enterprises, as the mainspring of the movement seems to stem from the need to satisfy the wants of thousands of new residents. An unusual feature of the growth is the near completion of a drive-in theater at 3500 Est 33rd South, and the proposed construction of three additional motion picture theaters. A Joseph Lawrence theater will be built on the west side of Highland High-land Drive ner 33rd South, a Firmage theater will be built on 21st South near 21st East, and a third theater is planned for the shopping center to be built 21st South and 23rd East. ; New Shopping Center A recently completed neighborhood neigh-borhood shopping center is located lo-cated on Stratford Aevnue near Glenmare St. Two grocery stores, an ice cream parlor, bakery bak-ery and drug store nave been built during the last year and are now in operation. One build- ing, 1555-59 Stratford Ave., houses the Fernwood Ice Cream and Candy Co., a branch store of Dunford Bread Co., and the Servicecenter Drug. The building build-ing is owned by Mr. and Mrs. George Wood of 1826 Garfield Ave., who started the ice cream and candy store for their son Dick who . recently returned from army service in Tokyo. They manufacture their own ice cream and candy with a trademark "Fernwood." -The Servicenter Drug is a self-service self-service concern owned and operated oper-ated by L. D. Parry, formerly of Montgomery Ward and Safeway. An IGA store east of Fernwood Fern-wood is owned and managed by Harold Allred of 2535 Alden St. Mr. Allred operated the meat market of a store at 13th East and 21 South before opening up his large store on Stratford Avenue. The Stratford market at 1570 Stratford operated by Leo D. Bills completes the shopping center in that neighborhood. Highland Drive Shows Growth Three new concerns have opened on Highland Drive just south of the concentrated Sugar I House business area1. A Inew large building at 22G3 Highland Dr., houses the Luxaire Heating Heat-ing Co. owned by Abe and Jim Sieverts, also owners of the building, and Hyland Cleaners owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Matteo Pecoraro of 2282 Windsor St. 'A new eating establishment es-tablishment called the "Farmer's "Farm-er's Daughter," managed by Arthur Morgan is located on the west side of Highland Drive. Approaching 33rd South on Highland Drive several new en-terprizes en-terprizes have been started. Labeled La-beled "Shopping Center." ,is the new home of Cashis King grocery gro-cery store and Mount Air Pharmacy Phar-macy at 3003 Highland Drive, was completed last winter. Store No. 3 in the Cashis King system, the grocery is operated by Ralph Gerrard, long-time resident resi-dent of the southeast. The pharmacy phar-macy is owned by Ralph Jones and managed by Wayne Galloway. Gallo-way. Beu Briinimcl (o Open Soon Nearing completion at 3100 Highland Drive is the new Beau llrummti restaurant, owned and i operated by Mr. and Mrs. Geo. F. Glaus. A large central unit will house the Dinner House including in-cluding a banquet room Adjoining Adjoin-ing and to the north is a drive-in drive-in for short orders. The Glaus French Pastry Shop will occupy I a separate building immediately south of the Dinner House. Diagonally accross the highway high-way at the Wasatch Service station, sta-tion, the manager, 13. 13. Neff, ha3 constructed an addition averaging 00 feet in width and extending back 82 feet which will be a center for Firestone tires and automotive parts. |
