Show Speaker J. Martin To Address SJfah Hepublicans The Republican campaign will get into high gear on Sept. 23 with a big rally in Salt Lake City, when the main speaker will be Joseph W. Martin, Jr., of Massachussets, Speaker of the House of Representatives. The rally will be held at the Hotel Utah at 8 p.m. Short talks also will be given by Congressman Con-gressman William A. Dawson and Douglas R. Stringfellow. The meeting, of course, is open to all. Speaker Martin, who has been a member of the House for 30 years, has had a notable career' in the Republican party. He was first elected as a member mem-ber of the Sixty-Ninth Congress in 1924 and has served continuously contin-uously ever since. He served as permanent chairman of the Republican National Conventions Conven-tions in 1940, 1944, 1948, and 1952, which exceeded the former form-er record held by Senator Cabot Ca-bot Lodge, Sr., who served three times. Speaker Martin also al-so has served as Chairman of the Republican Congressional Campaign committee and as a member and chairman of the National Committee. He was elected Minority Leader of the Seventy-Sixth and succeeding Congresses except the Eightieth and Eighty-third, in which he was elected Speaker. |
