Show Sports In The Open Spaces EDITOR'S NOTE Following are a few tips and helps for the sportsmen as Utah begins to pr'epare for the fall hunting season. Material has been prepared by the Utah Fish and Game Department. , Utah elk hunters found the. going a bit rough during the early days of the 1953 season which started Saturday, October Oct-ober 3, on 11 of the 19 elk hunting units where permits were authorized. Nearly all reports point to the extreme drouth conditions and heavy late foliage as chief contributing factors for the lower low-er success ratio of kills per hunter numbers on most units. Field reports from Fish and Game Department workmen indicate in-dicate that elk hunters having the most success are those who came equipped for rough going and were willing to go into the high cover and out-of-the-way habitat. Few animals have been taken on the open ridges. One district, the Nebo General showed 115 hunters checking Out with elk during the first three days of the 13 day season for a success average of 35 based on the 310 permit holders who checked for the hunt. The season ended October 13. With one pre-season hunt already al-ready past, there will remain seven late, or post-season, elk hunts yet to be held this year. The 128 day general trout season came to a close on Utah waters at 9:00 p.m., Sunday, October 11, with reports indicating indi-cating that it has been a successful success-ful one for most anglers. Several lower elevation waters wat-ers are open to year around angling. ang-ling. License holders desiring to fish after October 11, should check the 1953 angling proclamation proc-lamation for such waters before going afield. Spokesmen for the Fish and Game Department note that most of the state's twelve hatcheries hatch-eries are now segregating the trout stocks raised this year. Near legal and larger fish will be planted in the near future into waters where past experience exper-ience has shown a good carryover carry-over of fall planted trout. Many thousands of wild raised trout have already been stocked all over the state. |
