The' Longhorns won a close basketball contest from the Cougars of Union in a game that was a thriHer all the way. Union's loss gave the Longhorns a tie with the Cougars for second place and gave the Utes from Vernal the lead' with two wins and no losses. Altamont took off in the early seconds of play and before the Cougars knew what was going on, the Longhorns had a 6-0 lead. Then with Jackie Bailey hitting three from the foul line and Larry Ross splitting the strings from outside, the Cougars closed the gap to 6-5. The first quarter ended end-ed 12-12, and the half found the Longhorns out front 32-28. Cougars Make Drive After the' 10-minute intermission intermis-sion Coach Glen Allred'S Cougars' came back and within three minutes min-utes they had overtaken the four point lead and ran the score to 35-32 before' Altamont was able to register a counter. Then a young sophomore, Grant DroUin-(Continued DroUin-(Continued on Pag'e Eight) Altamont Dumps Union, First Time In History (Continued from Pag One) ger and another fast kid, Pete Nyberg, Ny-berg, lead a sustained drive by the Longhorns' that tied the score at 37-37 at the end of the third period, and carried them on to their first victory in the history of Union High School. This' Drollinge'r kid was just about the smoothest looking boy on the floor last Friday, and one of the finer prospects to come out of the Upper Country in several years. He is fast, shoots well and plays a fine defensive game. The fact that he is only in his second year of high school will, make him a marked player for a few more years. He scored 16 points for high honors. Larmie Bird with 13 was , second high scorer, and Jackie Bailey with 10 led Union in the offensive category cate-gory of the game. Altamont made it a big night when its "B" team beat Union 49-41. Eaton Makes Record Uintah's Valoy Eaton, who a .few weeks ago was suff firing from an illness that might have "Idelined him for the season, apparently ap-parently has recovered. This fact is evidenced by the 33 points he scored against little Tabby on the latter's floor. The Utes really poured it on Coach Mickey Cl.l'e-ton's Cl.l'e-ton's boys as they routed the Tigers 68-26 to take over top spot and remain the team to beat for the title. Union Beats Craig , The Cougars gained a 48-41 victory over a visiting team from Craig, Colorado, Saturday night. Coach Allred used his entire squad' of 14 kids with most of them breaking into the scoring column. This , week Uintah travels to Duchesne and Tabiona makes the trip, to Altamont, while the Union Cougars will- be resting, if they fail to line' up a practice game.
