Show Missionary Experiences Of Charles W. McConkie By C. W. McConkie EDITOR'S NOTE:- The following fol-lowing article is a paid advertisement adver-tisement inserted in the Roosevelt Roos-evelt Standard and the Uintah Basin Record by a man, C. W. McConkie. who has since 1935 served 12 short-ierm missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and is now devoting? ..the ..few ..remaining; years of his life to teaching a religious philosophy he believes. One day I was tracting in Se-dalia. Se-dalia. I knocked at a door and a woman came to the door. I told her I was a missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of f Latter-Day Saints, commonly called Mormons, with' headquarters headquar-ters in Salt Lake City, Utah. She said: "I belong to a church and I am perfectly satisfied." I asked her if she had ever read where Paul said: "There was one Lord, one faith, one baptism." Ephseians 4 ch. 5 verse. She said: "Yes." Then I said: "If that is so there is only one true Church." She said: "Yes." Then I said: "There are hundreds of different churches, church-es, now which one is the right one, according to the Bible. I said: "I can prove by the Bible which one is the right Church." She said, "If you can, I would like to have you do it." I said to her: "Have you ever read in Revelations 14:6, where - John saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, bearing the everlasting Gospel to preach to those that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, kindred, tongue and people?" I asked her if she had read that. She said she had. I told her not to forget for-get that. Then I asked her if she had read Daniel 2:44, where Daniel saw the time when the God of Heaven would set up a kingdom that would stand forever. She said she had read it, . then I told her not to forget it. Then I asked her what Church she belonged to. She said the Methodist, then I asked her who started the Methodist Church. She said John Wesley and then I asked her if that anlel that John saw came to John Wesley and gave to him the everlasting Gospel to preach to every nation, kindred and people. She said: "No, there have not been any angles come to earth since the days of the apostles. We don't need them. We have the Bible." Then I asked if any heavenly f ' messenger had come to John Wesley and given to him the authority to organize the Methodist Meth-odist Church, and she said: "No. there have not been any heavenly heav-enly messengers since the days of the Apostles. We don't need - them, we have the Bible." "Then I said to her: "If you go to the Baptists and the Presbyterians, Pres-byterians, and all the other churches, they will admit the angel that John saw never came to the man that started their church, so the Bible casts them all off. Now there is one more, the Church, of Jesus Christ of, Latter-Day Saints, or what is called the Mormon Church. You ask one of those Mormon missionaries mis-sionaries who started the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Latter-Day Saints, or what is called the Mormon Church, and he will tell you Joseph Smith. Then ask him: "Did the angel that John saw come to Joseph Smith with the Gospel to be preached to every nation, kindred, tongue and people? He will answer, "Yes, he gave to Joseph Smith the Gold Plates and the Book of Mormon is the translation of the Gold Plates. It tells of a lit-te lit-te colony of people that came to America from Jerusalem 600 years before Christ, and landed in 'South America, who are the ancestors of the American Indians, In-dians, and it tells of Christ coming com-ing to this continent after his ascension, as-cension, and teaching the Gospel to the people here in America, and his teachings were written on the Gold Plates. When Joseph Smith "translated them, and they contained the Gospel, then Joseph Jo-seph Smith has the Gospel given giv-en to him by an angel. John the Baptist came to him and Oliver Cowdry on the 15th day of May, 1829 and conferred on them the Aaronic Priesthood, giving them the authority to preach the Gospel Gos-pel and to baptize for the remission remis-sion of sins." "Then in June, 1829, came Peter, James and John, who conferred con-ferred on them the Melchizadek Priesthood, and qrdained them apostles and commanded them to organize the Church. So on April 6, 1830, they organized the Church of Jesus Christ f Latter?- Day Saints. So this Church that Joseph organized is the only one that is organized in fulfillment of scripture. It is the only one that the angel John came to see. It is the only one that Heavenly Messengers came and conferred Divine Authority) on. and commanded them to organize or-ganize it after the ancient pattern. pat-tern. So this church is the only one that has been organized in fulfillment of Revelations 14:6, and Daniel 2:44, and it is the only church that supports every claim it makes from the Bible." Experience No. 2 One day as I was tracting in Sedalia, Missouri, a town of about 25,999 people, I rang a doorbell and when a man came to the door I told him I was a Missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter - Day Saints, commonly known as Mormons. Mor-mons. Then I told him about the restoration of the Gospel and how Joseph Smith got the Gold Plates. About that time a man came out of another room He came up to the door and said: "I am a Protestant minister, minis-ter, can I ask you a question?" I said: "Ask any you want." He said: "Where are the gold plates you were telling this man about?" I told him: "The angel who' gave them to him came and got them as soon as Joseph Smith got through trans-latin trans-latin them." And he said to me: "If you can prove to me that Joseph Smith has these plates, I will take you by the hand and be one with you." I said to him: "I can prove to you by Bible the divinity of the Book of Mormon with more scriptural evidence than you can prove that Christ is the son of God." He said: "Go ahead, let's hear it." And I said: "I want to ask you a Question. "How many men wrote the New Testament?" Testa-ment?" He said: "Eight mat-t thew. Mark, Luke, John. Peter, Paul, Jude, and James." I asked him if he had ever seen any of them and he said, "No." Then I said to him: "How do you know they wrote the New Testament?" Testa-ment?" He said: "Because the New Testament says so. So then I said to him: "You get a Book of Mormon, and on one of the first pages you will see the names of eleven men. Three of the men, David Whit-mer, Whit-mer, Oliver Cowdry, and Martin Harris testify that they saw the plates, and heard the voice of God declaring that they had been translated correctly and by the Sift and power of God. The other 8 gave their testimony testi-mony to the world that they saw the plates and handled them, and knew of a surety that Joseph Smith had them. Now these books were put on sale right where they were printed and anyone could buy a Book of Mormon and go around and see all of these men and ask them. 'Did you see the plates and handle han-dle them?' and set their testimony testi-mony first hand. Now these eleven men they could go see and talk to. because they all lived close around there. We accept ac-cept the New Testament on the testimony of eight men we never saw. so there is more evidence in favor of the Book of Mormon thon there is of the New Testament, Testa-ment, and both are true." "Now, we will go to the Bible and see what we can get from it in Genesis 15:18. The Lord said to Abraham: "Unto thy seed have I given this land from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the River Euphrates the Kenites, the Kenizites and the Kudmonites, and the Hittiles, and Periiizles and the Rephaim and the Amorites and the Can-anites. Can-anites. and the Girgashites and the Jebusites. which was then called the land of Canaan." All this the Lord gave to Abraham and his seed for an inheritance. In Genesis 28, the Lord renews ; the covenant he made to Abraham, Abra-ham, to Isaac, Abraham's son. In Chapt. 28:3, the Lord said i to Isaac: "Sojourn in this land and I will be with thee, and will bless thee, for unto thee will I "give all these countries and I will perform the oath which I swore unto Abraham, thy Father, and I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will Sive unto thy seed all these countries and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed." In Genesis, Gen-esis, 28:3, Isaac says to Jacob, his son: "And God Almighty, bless thee and make thee fruitful fruit-ful and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people and give the blessing of Abraham to thee and to thy seed with thee that thou mayest inherit the land where thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham." Now we see that God rave to Abraham the land of Canaan for an inheritance, that he renewed re-newed this covenant with Isaac and also with Jacob. So we see that the land of Canaan was given to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob for an inheritance. Now we will go to Genesis 49:26. where Jacob is blessing Joseph. Jacob says to Joseph: "The blessings of Thy. Father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost ut-most bounds of the everlasting hills. They shall be on the head of Joseph and on the head of him that was separate from his brethren." So we see Joseph obtained a greater blessing than Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. They obtained the land of Canaan for their inheritance, in-heritance, but Joseph obtained one that was to extend to the utmost bounds of the everlasting everlast-ing hills. Now you go and stand in Egypt, where Joseph was at that time, and then measure to the utmost bounds, and see if you won't find yourself somewhere some-where in America. So Joseph was to have America Ameri-ca for his inheritance, and in Genesis 48, Joseph's seed was to become a multitude of nations. na-tions. Now, where is there a multitude of nations that have all sprung from one source one place here in America, the Indians. In-dians. Then I asked this preacher: preach-er: "How did they get here? And he said: "I don't know." Then I asked if he believed according ac-cording to what I had showed him in the Bible that the American Amer-ican Indian was the seed of Joseph. He said, "Yes." Then I asked him: "How did they get here?" He said: "I don't know." Then I told him: "The Book of Mormon that Joseph translated from the Gold Plates tell of a little colony of people that left Jerusalem 600 years before Christ, and landed in South America, and who are ancestors of the Indians, and they brought with them some brass plates, and on these brass plates was the genealogy of the tribe of Joseph." "So this colony was of the tribe of Joseph, so from the Book of Mormon, the Indians are the seed of Joseph. Now, go to Ezekiel 37, where the Lord told the Prophet Ezekiel to take two sticks and write on them, one, the stick of Judah was the Bible. He said: "Yes." And I asked him what was the stick of Joseph. He said: "I don't know." Then I told him: "The Book of Mormon Mor-mon was the writings of the tribe of Joseph, then Ezekiel tells us that these two sticks shall become one. Then I asked him how they were one and he said: 'I don't know." Then I tild him: "Because they both taught the same thing. The Bible tells us the Christ was born at Jedusalem; in that country he lived and grew to manhood. There he was crucified, died and buried, resurrected, and ascended ascend-ed to Heaven. That is the Testimony Tes-timony of the New Testament Writers. "The Book of "Mormon tells U3 i that after his resurrection he ap-I ap-I peared to the people on this continent con-tinent and showed them the j prints of the nails in his hands and feet, and that he taught I them the Gospel the same as he had done at Jerusalem. So the Book of Mormon is the strongest witness there is for the Bible." In the 85th Psalm it says: "Righteousness shall come down out of the Heaven and truth shall spring out of the Earth." When the Angel Moroni took the gold plates out of that stone box where they had been buried over 1400 years, and they contained con-tained the everlasting Gospel as Christ taught it to the ancient inhabitants of America, that was when truth sprang out of the ground." Then I said to him: "In John 10:16 Christ says: "And other sheep I have which are not of this fold. Them also I must bring and they shall hear my voice and there shall be one fold and one shepherd." Then I asked him who the other sheep were that Christ referred re-ferred to and he said "The Gentiles.' Gen-tiles.' Then I asked him: "Didn't the Gentiles get the Gospel from that fold at Jerusalem, and when the Apostle Paul was converted, didn't Christ say he was a chosen chos-en vessel to' bear his name before be-fore the Gentiles?" He said: "Yes." Then I said: "It could not have been the Gentiles." Then he said: "That's right. I told him: "In the Book of Mormon, Mor-mon, when Christ was talking to the Nephites, he told them that he told his disciples at! Jerusalem that other sheep he had that were not of that fold, 'Ye are they of whom I speak.', So, from the Book of Mormon: we learn who are the other sheep that were not of that fold at Jerusalem." Isiah 29 tells us of a people that would be brought down and speak out of the ground and thy speech shall be low out of the dust and thy voice shall be one that hath a familiar spirit out of the ground and thyi speech shall whisper out of the-dust. the-dust. ! This refers to the Book ojt Mormon. Joseph Smith took it out of the ground where it had j been buried for over 1400 years, j Also the 11th and 12th verses refer to the - Book of Mormon. After I had finished talking j with him, he said: "I am glad you stopped in and talked to me. I have been interested." The Missionary's prayer "Oh, Lord, bless me with a clear and a correct understanding of the Gospel, and with the fiift of ex-j plaining it. and the power to impress the truth upon every honest soul- that we come in contact with, and the praise, honor and Glory be thine forever. for-ever. Amen." j When Nichodemus came to! Christ, he asked him the quee-; tion: "What shall I do to inherit Eternal life?" The answer was:j "You must be born again." And1 Nichodemus said: "How can a man be born again after he is old?" Christ, answering, said:. "Verily, verily, I say unto you.; except a man be born of the I water and of the spirit, he can not enter the Kingdom of Heav-j en." John 3:5. The question' is: What doe a ' man have to do to be born of' the Spirit?" Paul says. "Faith' comes by hearing the word ef: God, but Knowledge comes by; obeying." On the day of Pentecost, when ! the Apostles preached to the ' people he told them "that same Jesus who ye have crucified and i hanged on a tree, Him hath God: raised to be a Prince of Life." And we are his witnesses. So also is the Holy Ghost when people heard the testimony of the apostles, they were convinced con-vinced that Christ was the son of God. They asked the question: ques-tion: "What shall we do?" Peter's Pe-ter's answer was: "Repent and be baptized in the same of Jesus Jes-us Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the Holy Ghost." Acts 2:38. And when they received the Holy Ghost, it was conferred on them by the laying on of hands. Then Philip went down to Se-maria Se-maria and baptized the Samaritans. Samari-tans. When the apostles heard ii they sent Peter and John down and when they had laid their hands on them they received the Holy Ghost. When Saul was converted Anais said: "Saul, jarise and be baptized and wash away they sins." When Ananias had laid his hands on Saul, he received the Holy Ghost, and I when Paul Baptized the men at jEphesus he laid his hands on them and they received the Holy Ghost. Before anyone receives tne Holy Ghost, they must preparo themselves to receive it. They must have faith, which Paul says comes by hearing the word of God. Peter said: "Repent, then be baptized in the name of Jesut Christ for the remission of sins, then get it through the laying of hands. Then if we have done what Peter told the people, if it has been the honest, sincere, desire of our heart to do the will of God, then we will receive the Birth of the Spirit. The Comforter that Christ said the Father would send, the rift : of Eternal life which Christ said is to know God and Jesus Christ whom the Father sent in to the world. Christ said in His Sermon on 1 the Mount: "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall sep God." Before a person can be pure in heart .he must receive the Holy Ghost, and before he can get the Holy Ghost, he must have his sins forgiven, and before be-fore he can have his sins forgiven, for-given, he must be baptized for j the remission of sins, and be- to quit breaking nV?
