This second such school held m this district to assist pupils who have speech defects, was deemed a success by school officials of-ficials and other administrators of the program. It is reported that nearly every case where a speech defect is prevalent, was represented at a special instruction instruc-tion school held at the Roosevelt Elementary School all day Saturday. Sat-urday. In every case, either the parent or teacher, or both, accompanied ac-companied the pupil when 'this special instruction was given. These interviews were conducted con-ducted by Mrs. Gee; Dr. Alonzo Morley and Prof. Lorin Jex of the speech department at 'the Brigham Young University; Mr Green, from the school for the deaf and blind at Oden; and Dr. Parry, of the Ogden City schools. On Thursday Mrs. Gee completed com-pleted a schedule of visits at Roosevelt Elementary, Myton My-ton Elementary, Duchesne Elementary, Ele-mentary, and Altamont Elementary Elemen-tary schools, giving pointers to I the parents and teachers on how to better cope with problems of these children who have speech handicaps. A special meeting of parents and teachers was held at the Roosevelt Elementary School Friday night for receiving instruction in-struction from these trained persons per-sons in speech and hearing. A film on stttering was shown to I the group. A heavy representa- tion from the eastern part of the county was in attendance at the meeting. Mrs. Williams pointed out that a statement made by Dr. Morley to this troup was verv impressive. Dr. Morley told the parents and teachers that they "need to be more conscious of speech problems in children inasmuch in-asmuch as this is the critical period per-iod in a child's life for forming permanent speech, habits; ' thai by early assistance where a speech defect is prevalent this deformity in articulation may be corrected by special attention and training of the child; that if a minor speech difficulty is overlooked in a child, this may-become may-become a serious problem and hinder the child through itj life.' : It is the hope of the officios that such a speech clinic may be ' conducted annually in this, school district. Mrs. Gee will return to the district within a few month? to make a follow-up check on the cases which were intw-1 viewed during this week's clhv ical program, Mrs. Williams said. Mrs. Evelyn Johnson, puoW: health nurse for this district, made arrangements for the Roosevelt Roos-evelt clinic Saturday. - |
