Show CLIFF MEMMOTT, Ediior ANOTHER DUCHESNE COUNTY FAIR ENDS, WORKERS & PATRONS MADE IT SUCCESSFUL. . . Another very successful county fair has made history in Duchesne County. Last Thursday, Friday and Saturday saw interested people drive to the community of Duchesne, Du-chesne, home of the Duchesne County Fairs, where they joined in the various activities designed to display our home-grown products, our skills and talents, and to' entertain enter-tain the people. All this was done because a few men and women were progressive to the extent that they wanted to see a county fair organized and perpetuated. In this comment I am not going to mention names for fear some might be overlooked and then feelings would be hurt. Suffice it to say that from the chairman of the board on down through the ranks to' the individual who helped on just one committee, their efforts are greatly appreciated, and deserve all the praise and commendation possible that can be heaped upon them. I regret not being able to participate in all the activities ac-tivities on Saturday, and especially missing the parade, which has been reported to be one of the best ever seen locally. A previous committment made it necessary for me to be out of the county on Saturday. The financial success of the fair has not been determined de-termined and probably won't be known for several days. But regardless of that incidental, there is nothing that ever happens in a county that does more to develop good will; bring people together; and sell the county to each other and visitors, than a county fair. Great strides have been made in this county in the past few years in developing those necessary experiences that bring communities together. to-gether. As long as we continue to have county fairs, we can expect to bring our people closer together. I firmly believe be-lieve that more of the burden of financing the fair should be placed upon the county and thus eliminate having to . beg for funds to do the job. In any event, let us all press on in working for a bigger and better county and county fair. v E v : AN INTERESTING REPORT WILL BE FOUND IN THE ROOSEVELT STANDARD .... We hope and trust that readers of the Roosevelt Standard Stan-dard this week will take a few minutes time to read care- fully the annual statement of the Duchesne County School ' District, which appears in this issue. In it is contained i listings of expenditures of the taxpayers' money, to' whom and for what the school tax dollar was spent during the 1953-54 term. Individuals who worked for, and firms who gave service ser-vice to the school district are listed in alphabetical order and itemized, showing the cost. The state law that' makes it imperative that every school district publish an annual financial report has had rough going over the years many districts have ignored, or refused to publish the statment. Various groups have tried to get the law repealed and twice the supreme court has held that the law is valid and must be upheld. There has been developed in the past few years more of a consciousness on the part of public servants to use the statement, in self defense, to show taxpayers where ' and for what their money has been spent. In doing so, they have become more careful in expenditures and in showing partiality. This is what the law was originally intended to do. Publishers have always been on the spot in trying to' enforce en-force the law because they were accused of having mostly a money interest. This is hardly the case, as the small yearly publication charge is not very important in the economic improvement of a newspaper. It has come to me that some school officials have used, the argument that publication of teachers' salaries hampered ham-pered securing of enough teachers in Utah. In this regard it might be noted that there is and has been for years a severe nation-wide shortage of qualified teachers. The field of teaching is not unique for help shortages. The same applies to' the printing business and many others where skilled employees are necessary. It is merely an indication that the country is prosperous, production is high and jobs are comparatively easy to find in almost any line of work. |
