Show Region 5 Basketball Season Opens Friday Six Teams Gird For Title Won By Rough Riders The Uintah Basin division of Region 5 will' begin its 1951 basketball league play Friday night, when all six teams swing into action, with Roosevelt being be-ing host to Duchesne: Alterra going to Tabiona, and Altamont making the jaunt to Vernal to test the Utes. , The Rough Rider-Eagle contest con-test at the Roosevelt elementary gym, perhaps is the feature game of the three; mainly because be-cause the Riders are the defending defend-ing region champions and the Eagles would like nothing better bet-ter than to be the first team to end their domination of the' basketball picture over the past few years. Then, there is that bit of interschool rivalry that whets the followers of both teams. Who will draw the starting assignments at Roosevelt Friday Fri-day night remains rather uncertain un-certain by both coaches. However, How-ever, it is believed that Frank Snyder, 6 ft. 2 in. center, will be at that post, with Ken Nick-ell Nick-ell and Franklin Peterson as forwards. At guards. Coach Marcus Garrett will make his choice from John Benson, Scott Nickell, Dale Larsen and Russell Gingell, with the first guess being be-ing the former two. Coach Bill Smith, who has developed a smooth working crew at the Duchesne high ; school, is very pleased with the work done by Leo Brady, six-I six-I footer, who he is certain to ' start at center. At forward will i be either Rex Broadhead, Ron Robbins, Billy Harris, or My-.ron My-.ron Taylor. Guards who will I probably be sent to the firing ' line will be selected from Ted (Continued On Back Page) i i Region Five Basketball ... (Continued from page 1) Marsing, Steve Beal, or Garth Partridge. Other squad members mem-bers are Bert Young, Jack Wim-mer. Wim-mer. Rex Pearson and Dovle Harris. Tabiona has shown some surprising sur-prising strength and their new coach, Joel Lillywhite. is convinced con-vinced that his team will be tough to beat before the season gets too far along the way. He is faced with two major problems prob-lems first, he is coaching at the next to smallest high school in Utah- that is playing basketball; basket-ball; and second, . he has no depth to his team. But what he lacks in size, the boys make ! up in determination and fight. When Alterra makes the jaunt across Duchesne county Friday night to meet Tabiona, they go with new coach, Glen Allred, who is directing athletics athlet-ics at the Spartan school for the first time. Experience is the main thing he lacks, with only three men, Lynn Bracken, Doug Phillips, and Cloyde Wiscombe, back from last year's team', which won only one game last year in league competition. Juniors are Norman Angus Kenneth Betts, Gwen Bodily Bob Chapoose, Darrel Hall, Bili Harris, Brent Morrill. Marion 'Morrill, Elvih Rasmussen. Brice Searle and Clifton Jenkins Doyle Huber is the only sophomore. soph-omore. Altamont could easily be the dark-horse in Region 5 as veteran vet-eran Coach Hal Barton takes his team of experienced boys to Vernal Friday to test Coach Clark Greenhalgh's Utes, who are rated as the No. 1 team in the league by up-state dope-sters. dope-sters. Vernal has the tallest crew in the league, and although their pre-season record is not too impressive, they still are a team that must be regarded very highly at this juncture All league games during the season will begin at 6:45 and 8:15 p. m., with the preliminary contest set for the earlier hour and the main attraction set for 8:15. Season tickets have been sold for all games at Roosevelt with only general admission space available. j ' |
