He will represent the fifth senatorial sen-atorial district, Duchesne and Uintah counties. In announcing the appointment appoint-ment of Mr. Ashton, Governor Lee stated that he had carefully careful-ly considered the various proposed pro-posed candidates for the vacated vacat-ed post, and the fact that Mr. Orser was a resident of Roosevelt, Roos-evelt, he felt it only proper that his successor come from the same community. The law specifies spe-cifies that he must come from the same county and the same political party. (Section 25-1-5, Utah Code Annotated, 1943). At a special meeting of the Democratic Central committes of Duchesne and Uintah counties held last Friday night at the Roosevelt city building, four prominent members of the Democratic Dem-ocratic party from Duchesne county were proposed to the governor, as per his request. A life-long member of the Democratic party, Mr. Ashton was born in Vernal, where he resided until coming to Roosevelt, Roos-evelt, July 8, 1913, to assume management of the store founded found-ed by his father, the late Leslie Ashton. He is a gTaduate of the University of Michigan law school, class of 1913, and for a short time followed the law profession, but later gave up the practice of law to devote full time to the mercantile business. busi-ness. He did, however, serve a short time as county attorney before resigning. He was county Democratic chairman for a term. The new state senator has served as mayor and city councilman coun-cilman for Roosevelt and has been active in other civic and fraternal , affairs of the city. "I am honored at the appointment appoint-ment to attempt to fill the shoes of as able a man as Lynn Orser, Or-ser, and I promise the people of the Uintah Basin that I will do my untmost to fill the position posi-tion with honor, and to represent repre-sent them honestly and fairly," Mr. Ashton said this morning. "I haven't had time to study the legislative picture, and will chart my course slowly until I get my feet under me," he stated. Mr. Ashton will be sworn In as senator next Monday when the Utah state legislative bodies meet at the state capitol building build-ing for the 1951 session. |
