Show Great Birthday To Be Observed in Utah April 6th Did You Know The Historic Importance Im-portance of the Year 1853? One hundred and two years ago Great Salt .Lake City, the new headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was in its infancy. The business section of the city consisted of the General Storehouse on the site now ocupied by the Hotel Utah; the Tithing Office located on Main Street, immediately north of the General Storehouse; the Council House gn the southwest corner of the intersection of South Temple and Main Street where the Union Pacific Building is now located, and a few small stores. On the Temple Square was the Old Tabernacle, dedicated April 6, 1852, and located on the site now ocupied by the Assembly Hall. Immediately north of the j Old Tabernacle was still standing I the bowery erected July 31, 1847 by the Mormon Battalion boys from Pueblo, Colorado. Many of the people had moved from their homes in the Old Fort and built comfortable pioneer homes on the inheritances dr lots given them by the governing body of the church. These were scattered scatter-ed in different sections surrounding surround-ing Temple Square. Adobe meetings meet-ings houses were being built in the various wards which had been organized in 1849. On February 14, 1853, a great concourse of people gathered rom settlements near and far throughout through-out the Territory to witnes the selection in the Temple Square of the actual site on wlych the great Temple was to be built. Early that morning, Jesse W. Fox, Territorial surveyor, had completed his work and properly staked the area selected. se-lected. At 11:00 a.m., President Brig-ham Brig-ham Young, his counselors and the Quorum of Twelve Apostles, proceeded to the east line of the Temple site; City Marshal Fera-morz Fera-morz Little with the assistance of the City Police, pointed to the lines within which the Temple would be constructed. President Young thereupon delivered a thrilling address to the assembled thousands. A number of bands throughout the city added greatly to the joyousness of the occasion. |
