Show Fire! Fire! Fire! A cry rings out in the darkness of the night. A fire is raging, uncontrolled un-controlled and fierce. A man dashes to the telephone and in a voice hoarse with fear relays the information to the operator. op-erator. "A fire here at John Doe's ranch, just a mile west of town. Won't you please send us help; get the firemen and the truck? And do hurry our home is burning burn-ing fast." The operator hurriedly contacts the fire chief. The chief cannot give permission to ring the siren, to call the other firemen or to say we'll go. For it is a law that the truck cannot leave the city limits to a fire out of town. The mayor is contacted for permission per-mission to go, but it is his duty to see that the city is protected and because- of the risk involved in case a fire should break out in town while they were gone, he can't say yes. i The firemen may decide to go out to Doe's ranch and help what they can in putting out the fire, but what they can do alone isn't much. This incident is as close to you as it is to anyone who has had the same experience. For fire is no respecter of persons. It can strike anywhere at any time. In the last article on fire protection pro-tection we brought out the need for another fire truck. Not only for the protection of people out of town, but also for the added protection of those residents of Roosevelt. For the present fire equipment is inadequate. The group who gathered to discuss dis-cuss possibilities of getting another an-other truck, decided the fair way would be to make it a county pro-ject pro-ject for this area. A fire zone would be set up in a ten to fifteen mile area and the truck would be for the protection of tnese people The law requires that 25 0f the people in this zone sign a petition. Then in about a month a vote is called. If a majority vote to make the area a fire zone the dirstrict is set up with exact boundaries. The truck is obtained and paid for by the people only' in this area through a set tax levy. The truck would be housed in Roosevelt. It would be manned by its firemen; the city would pay for the housing and the wages and the county's share would come in . paying for the upkeep on the , truck. We welcome letters of comment , on this project from you people who will be benefited and from you who don't think it is a necessary neces-sary move. We'll give you facts t to prove that this is a worthwhile project. The Roosevelt Fire Dept |
