Show DEER COUNT IN AVIHTAQUIN CANYON MADE Fish and Game Groups Make Extension Survey and Deer Count Officials of the State Fish and Game department have just completed com-pleted a very extensive deer count and survey of feed and soil conditions in the Avintaquin country, which is a large tributary tribu-tary of the Strawberry river located lo-cated in the southwest part of Duchesne county. Livestock Men Make Complaints Livestock operators, . have for the past few years, complained of having congested areas on the deer winter range. During February of 1943 land owners, U S Forest service and Game officials made a survey which was approved by all parties. par-ties. Their report showed vegita-tion vegita-tion and soil conditions were very poor, however, need was felt for additional information by the State Fish and Game commission and the recent trip was made into this area. Trip Made March 29 and 30 Action was initiated by the State Fish and Game commission j under the leadership of State I Wardens. The . party consisted of I Henry Slaugh,- Vernal; Carl i Hacking, Roosevelt; Dave Thomas Thom-as Duchesne; Assistant Soil Con-' servationist Roy Shipley, Du- j chesne and Forest ranger Julian : R. Thomas, Duchesne. Favorable Conditions For Deer Count The weather conditions for deer counting, according to Warden War-den Henry Slaugh, was very favorable fav-orable as the snow covering in the basin and north slopes varied 'ni 16 to 30 inches. . Deer Counted The morning of the 29th, 115 head of deer were counted, from the Hayes ranch to mouth of Lion Hollow. This area seemed to be not overgrazed during the winter, but, there was every indication in-dication of heavy over-use during dur-ing spring, summer and fall by livestock. However, in other sections the feed conditions were very poor. Due to the rough country, covered cov-ered with Pinion and Juniper trees, it was agreed that no reliable re-liable estimate could be made of the number of deer in this area. 608 deer were seen during the two days. The deer generally were in very poor shape and the party has made a recommendation that a post season hunt during the latter part of November and about 400 permits be issued for the removal of deer of either sex, and that winter grazing by cattle be discontinued and that the fall and summer use be adjusted to the grazing capacity of the range. |
